Helen was born in Winnipeg on November 7, 1922, the daughter of George and Dora Simms. She passed away in Victoria on February I9, 2011. She is survived by Jim, her devoted husband of 63 years and her loving daughter, Alison. Before her marriage, she worked for the public service of Canada in Ottawa. Because of her skills and her strong work ethic, she was dispatched to local offices to put order into the filing systems. On one occasion, she felt she did not have enough to do and asked for reassignment to a busier department. Following the birth of her daughter, she applied the same devotion into becoming an unsurpassed full time mother and homemaker. Helen also
enjoyed her garden, turning it into a place of beauty. She had a lovely singing voice which won her the lead in several operettas and later made her a valuable member of her church choir. She was always ready to help her neighbours and will be missed by many of them. Thanks to the caring staff of Mt. Edwards Court, Dr. Kier MacMillan and Canon Peter Parker.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke’s Church, 3821 Cedar Hill Cross Road at 1:30 pm on Friday, February 25th. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

    Mr. Cross and Alison,

Helen was a lovely lady and I felt fortunate to have met her and assist in her care while she was at Victoria General. I know it was a very difficult decision to place her into care especially when you knew that she wanted to go back home. I did speak with the social worker after Helen moved into Mt Edwards Court and hear that she settled in and was very well liked by the staff there. It will be difficult for you Mr. Cross but I hope that with the promise of spring around the corner you will feel some comfort.
