BRIGHTWELL, Helen Elizabeth “Betty” (nee Stacey) 1925 – Dec 10, 2015. At 89, just short of her 90th birthday, Betty passed away peacefully in her own home in Esquimalt B.C. as was her wish. Betty was born in Hamilton Ontario to Leonard Brown Stacey and Constance Hillary Stacey (Cook). Moving to British Columbia as a young child, she was raised in Vancouver, graduating from UBC where she met her future husband Stanley Arthur Brightwell, who predeceased her in 2005. With Stan serving in the RCAF and later the Defense Research Board of Canada, Betty moved many times over the years mostly in Ontario and Quebec with a couple of years in Malaysia and a final move to Esquimalt. During these many years Betty was a homemaker, a teacher, an antique collector and dealer, a farmer, an author and a founding member of the Victoria Raging Grannies. Predeceased by both her parents and her brother David Stacey, she is survived by brother Michael Stacey (Sheila); her children Ken Brightwell (Kim) and Kathie Brightwell-Parke (Stephen); two grandchildren and three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. As per Betty’s wishes she has been cremated. A Celebration of Betty’s life will be held early in the New Year and her ashes will be interred in Chilliwack B. C. Special thanks to the VIHA Hospice nurses, The Qualicare Family Homecare Team, and to Ethyl, Allison, and Bill who all made it possible for Betty to pass on comfortably in her home.
