Born February 4, 1920 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour on May 7, 2009. He will be lovingly missed and forever remembered by Pearl, his wife of 68 years; his son, Murray (Jeanne); grandchildren, Lisa, Chad (Elizabeth) and Craig and his two dear great-granddaughters, Avery and Peyton, who always brought a smile to his face. After coming to Victoria in 1950, Jim worked at Eatons and Stylerite Shoes before becoming a furniture salesman at Woodwards, a career that he enjoyed for 20 years. He served faithfully at Victoria Gospel Chapel and Lambrick Park Church and for the last 10 years at The Church of the Nazarene, where they enjoyed the fellowship of the SHARPS Seniors Group and also spent several years working at the Compassionate Resource Warehouse. Over the past months at Mt. Tolmie Hospital, Jim and Pearl have appreciated the visits and calls from their many friends. Jim was a kind and gentle man who loved helping others. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A Graveside Service will be held at Royal Oak Burial Park at 12:30 pm on Thursday, May 14, 2009. A Memorial Service will follow at the Church of the Nazarene, 4277 Quadra Street, at 2:00 pm. Donations can be made to The First Church of the Nazarene or the Heart & Stroke Foundation. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Susan Matthews and the wonderful caring staff at
Mt. Tolmie Hospital. We also acknowledge the staff at VGH, Neuroscience and Rehab wards for their excellent care.

Although words cannot fully describe what your family is feeling, know that you are all being lifted up in prayer by many during this time. I am sorry for your loss.

Dear Jim, I know a lot of people think you cannot hear me anymore. But I know that you can. I just came from your Memorial
service. I must admit that I was profoundly moved. But then I knew
what kind of man you were.Did I say Man? I mean HUMAN.
I won’t forget the day we became neighbours in 94, nor the countless times that you helped me. How can I forget your and Pearl’s support and prayers during Irene’s illness. I will miss your good nature and smiling face while tending our gardens when I step out my frontdoor.
Pearl, Murray and Family, you know you are in my heart and thoughts. With my condolences, love and warmest regards

    Dear Murray, Jean and Family

Please accept my condolences in the passing of your father. I think of both your parents often, and their graciousness and the welcome I had in their home when I used to come down from Port Alberni on weekends.

I am sure that you will miss him very much but be encouraged, he will be rejoicing with his Lord.

When I was 3 years old, Mr. Walter Carter, who lived around the corner, came and asked if he could take me and my older brother (who played with his younger son) to Sunday School with his family. My parents said sure, that’d be fine.

When I was 9, the Carters sold their home to the Brydens, and I like to joke that one of the conditions of the sale was that Mr. Bryden had to continue to give me a ride to Sunday School.

He did that, faithfully, for 9 years, returning home between services to come get me. I will always be SO grateful for that.

My father did not have much use for Christians; he knew too many hypocrites. But he liked and respected Mr. Bryden, and that meant a lot to me – I’ve liked and respected him all my life, too. He was a good, kind, godly gentle man.

I now live in the home I grew up in, and whenever I walk up Tattersal, no matter how many moving vans park in that driveway, it’ll always be ‘The Brydens’.

I’m sad to see him gone but happy to know he’s with God now, and I look forward to seeing him again someday, and I will thank him again for all those rides.
