On January 13th, 2026, at RJH, the world lost a bright light when José Tavares Moniz passed away at the age of 60 years old. Joe was born on November 29, 1965, in Victoria, BC and lived life to the fullest with his humour and deep love for his kids, his family and his passion for sports, especially the “Habs”, hockey team. Whether sharing a meal, telling a story, dancing or lending a helping hand, Joe made every moment count.
Predeceased by his father, João Tiago Carreiro Moniz in October 2005, Joe is survived by his dear Mother, Maria Joana Tavares Moniz, his beloved son Joshua Moniz (Alana), his beloved daughter Chelsea Moniz (Jesse), their mother Cindy, brother John Moniz (Jen, Amber, Rio), sister Luiza Franco (Jimmy, Erin, Fiamma, Aria, Tyler) not to forget his furry grandkids Blu and Penny! Joe attended Oak Bay High School and gained so many friendships throughout the years, everyone loved Joe and Joe loved everyone.
Joe worked for many years at Chew Excavating as well as years doing drywall. You could often find Joe full of dirt or drywall dust covering his body!! Joe was a hard worker in any job he had and would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in life. Joe’s charismatic charm and personality attracted so many friends and family to enjoy the moment and always was able to put anyone in a happy joyful mood. His goofy dance moves attracted so many to the dance floor to join in no matter where he was.
Family and Friends are invited to attend the funeral for José Moniz on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 4635 Elk Lake Drive at 9:30am Viewing (Immediate family only), 9:45am Viewing (for everyone), 10:00am Rosary, 10:30am Funeral Service followed by a Mausoleum Service at Royal Oak Burial Park, 4673 Falaise Drive, Victoria BC, where we will honour Joe’s beautiful spirit.
Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Jacquie (Jones) Vickers I met Joe at Richmond Elementary School. I have fond memories of him because he was funny and such a sweetheart! One time in gym class (we were about grade 3 or 4), we were partners in tossing the medicine ball back and forth and Joe, in a gust of strength, threw the 10-15 lb ball and it hit me in the head. I had a concussion. Sometime later my mother was at the school for a concert, assembly or something and Joe came right over to her, introduced himself and apologized for hitting his daughter in the head with the medicine ball. My mother has never forgotten that meeting of “Little Joe” and we were talking about our memories of Joe today on the phone. Even though I have not seen Joe since high school at Oak Bay (I went only one year for grade 11), I’ll always remember he was active in sports there and remembered me from Richmond Elementary all those years later. Joe was a very special person, and both my mother and I are very sad to hear of his family’s huge loss.

Shannon & Spencer H. Joe did a lot of drywall work for us over the years. We met Joe through Cindy before Chelsea was born back in the old Family & Youth Court days on Pembroke Street. Joe was a kind, funny and hard working soul. Although we had not crossed paths with him for several years he was someone you didn’t quickly forget. We are so very sorry for the loss of a dad, friend, family member to all of those who loved Joe. We will always think of Joe fondly.

Alison Holmes I met Joe only once, when he and Cindy (with whom I was then working at Court Services) were living in Victoria. I know he loved to cook a Portuguese soup, which he was in the middle of cooking and which name escapes me. I think it had cabbage in it.
Joe had a sparkle and an infectious smile, which I remember well. My heart goes out to the Moniz family and all who loved Joe. I n particular, I offer this quote to his children and family (which my beloved Mom loved)… from A.A. Milne… “If ever we’re not together, there is something you must always remember. You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. Most important thing is, even if we’re apart, I’ll always be with you.” ~Winnie the Pooh
