John was born in Broomhill, Manitoba, October 22, 1922 and passed away peacefully at the Hospice in Victoria, March 28th. He is survived by Margaret, his dearly beloved wife of 63 years, his daughters Maureen (Douglas) and Sheila, his nieces, nephews and their families.

John was very proud of his Navy career of 25 years. He joined the RCN as a boy seaman September 16, 1940 and served on convoy duty in the North Atlantic until December 1945. He was home on Pacific Leave when the war ended. In peacetime he served as an Armourer in various capacities aboard the Ontario, Quebec, Crescent and Assiniboine among others and ashore as Senior Weapons Instructor at the Ordnance School, Naden. After retiring from the RCN as a Chief Petty Officer in 1965 he went on to work for the Royal Bank of Canada for 19 years, retiring once again in 1984. In recent years he enjoyed golfing, travelling and time spent in his yard and garden.

John was a very patient and quiet man who inspired respect from those who served and worked with him and who was loved dearly by all who knew him. He is predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Jean, his sisters Ruth and Audrey and his niece, Terry.

A Service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver St., Thursday, April 8th at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John’s memory to the Victoria Hospice.

    Dear Mrs Pinkney
A note to say how sorry I was to read of John,s passing in this morning,s paper. It has been a lot of years since we worked together at Main Branch but the attributes mentioned
in the obiturary certainly reflect my view of him, a reliable person who could be counted on to give of his best . He earned and had the respect of all people he dealt with.
I was also pleased to read he made the most of his retirement yearsand hope he did not suffer from long term illnesses that led to his death. I join you , your family as well as friends in mourning your loss and extend my deepest sympathy.
    Sincerely
    Roger Hemeon
