1918 – 2011

Joseph Routley passed away on October 26, 2011 at the age of 93 years. He was predeceased by Mary, his loving wife of 54 years. He is survived by his son, Peter (MaryLou) and daughter, Barbara (Brian); grandchildren, Steven and Melissa; 5 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was proud of his 30 years of military service in the Canadian Army with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps. He served overseas during the Second World War as a Regimental Sergeant Major. He spoke English, French and German. He was seconded to British Military Intelligence in Europe but would never discuss any secret operations that he had been involved in. He was always interested in espionage books such as “Bodyguard of Lies”, which gives some insight into the secret strategies that were being employed during the Second World War. ln 1967, he retired and the family moved to Victoria. There he taught high school for several years and later worked for the Post Office. His great passion was fishing which he only gave up at 88 years of age. He and Mary enjoyed travelling and often went back to England to visit Mary’s family. She was a war bride. He was a caring, compassionate man who liked to help his neighbours as much as possible.

The Funeral Service will be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Special thanks go to Dr. Kevin Wylie for his wonderful care and compassion over the years. Also to the staff on Bolton 2nd floor at Selkirk Place, especially Sue and Birch who went above and beyond in their support for Dad and the family. Heartfelt thanks to Trish O’Doherty of Cullenswood Companion Care who became part of the family as she visited and helped Dad. He looked forward to her sense of humour and just being with her. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to the Enterostomal Therapy Centre, Royal Jubilee Hospital, 1952 Bay Street, Victoria, V8R lJ8 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, #276 – 2950 Douglas Street, Victoria V8T 4N4.
