February 28, 1926 – February 7, 2012

Joyce was born in Fort William, Ontario, now known as Thunder Bay. From the age of two Joyce has lived in the Victoria area. After graduation from Victoria High School Joyce worked at the Bank of Montreal. Joyce and John were introduced to each other by mutual friend Ernie Wellwood. After her marriage to John in 1948, Joyce had a very busy life with four children and her many valuable contributions to the success of the family dairy business.

A gentle soul, Joyce will be remembered for her quiet strength, generosity, wonderful cooking, hospitality, and most of all, for her love for family and friends. She was also very fond of music, birds and animals, (in particular owls and dogs), travelling, and impromptu tea parties. Joyce will be deeply missed by her family, extended family and many friends. Joyce’s love lives on in all of us.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 63 years, John; daughter-in-law Linda; children Dianne (Joe), Michael (Cheri), Carol; grandchildren Jennifer (Shawn), Sarah (Michael), Alicia (Steve), Keely, and Sean; great-grandchildren Braedan, Trevor, Ashley, Owen, and Oliver; sister-in-law Elaine, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents Alice and William Smith; adoptive parents Florence and Hugh Andrews; brothers Ted, Fred, George and Doug Smith; and eldest son, David Pendray.

The family would like to thank the staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital Acute Care, South Unit, and Extended Care Unit for the loving care they provided for Joyce.

In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate a donation in Joyce’s name to either The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life will take place at St. Paul’s United Church, 2410 Malaview, Sidney, B.C. on Saturday February 25, 2012, at 1:30 pm. Tea will be served! Condolences to the family may be offered below.

  • Grant and Sheila Marshalll

Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your whole family, John.
To us, Joyce stands out as such a gentle loving lady. Although we had only known her for a very short time and were fortunate enough to be in her company on occasion at Probus functions she always brought a smile to our hearts. Talking with her on a bench, waiting for a ferry ride for one of those outings still brings a smile to my (Sheila’s) face because we had a little “private chuckle” about how to keep warm sitting on a cement bench on a pretty chilly day. Her sweet sense of humour was always present.
Gone from you now, but she lives on in your cherished memories for an eternity.
    Our condolences to you all,
    Grant and Sheila Marshall

I am sorry that I did not get to meet Mrs. Pendray as she must have been a marvellous woman. Her love for her family was evident and the foundation she and Mr. Pendray provided to the family showed by their many successes.
I am sure that Dave welcomes his Mother with open arms.
