April 9, 1918 – July 18, 2009
It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my beloved husband of 71 years. His was a hard and busy life. As a young boy, Karl worked in the family slate mine. In 1938, he and I, Edel, met and married. During WW2 he served with the Alta Battalion in Narvik. In 1956, with our young family, we immigrated to Canada, Salt Spring Island. He was initially employed in the construction of both the Crofton Mill and later the new Lady Minto Hospital. On completion of these, he designed and built Park Drive Guest House which we operated for over 22 years and later converted to Solvang B & B. Upon retirement, we moved to Victoria. Karl was a wonderful husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather and great-grandfather with a great sense of humor. He will be missed deeply by all his family and friends. No man was ever loved more! He was predeceased by two infant children in Norway and leaves behind to mourn, his wife, Edel; children, Erna (Ken), Solfrid, Ruth ( Derek), Henning, Kirsti (John); brother, Oddmund in Norway; 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. My sincere thanks to Dr. Dennis Francis for his care and home visits, Pastor Al Dudiak and the wonderful, caring Hospice Palliative Response Team Nurses. Special thanks to friends Christine Beatty and Dr. Allan Davies.
We will be united again! A Memorial Service will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Saturday, July 25, 2009 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donation to Hospice or charity of choice is appreciated.

Karl will be greatly missed by us who knew him as a kind and loving friend. He brought so much life to all our gatherings and we considered him a special person at all the gatherings we attended. He was a very fun loving person and will always be remembered by us.

You were so fortunate to have as fine a gentleman as Karl was to share. I have only learned now in 2016 of his passing as I became aware of John’s (son-in-law) book of SSI in the 60’s. We treasured your friendship as ‘fellow Scandinavians’ and Karl’s workmanship still lives on in the room he built for me at our cottage there.
