Larry Scott died on October 28, 2026, at home in Victoria, BC, at the age of 93.
Born in Toronto in 1933, Larry was a lifelong athlete. He played sports at North Toronto Collegiate and went on to compete in sports at the University of Toronto (just about all of them). That passion stayed with him for the rest of his life, right up to his last day, when he went for a swim.
He met the love of his life, Shirley, in 1958, when they were both working at a summer camp in Ontario. She worked the cafeteria counter and he was on staff. He asked her, “Can I get another jug of milk, please?” He was handsome and strong, but crucially, he said “please.” Three children followed, and then six grandchildren.
Larry taught math and phys. ed. (of course), mostly at West Humber Collegiate in Etobicoke. He coached everything, and he was one of the first to join the running craze of the 1970s. He introduced Shirley and their children to skiing, backpacking, canoeing, and the outdoor life. It was the best gift he ever gave.
He loved his teaching career and talked about his many former students his entire life. Whenever he ran into them, he would learn how some small gesture or lesson changed them. This gave him great satisfaction.
In retirement, he engaged in volunteer work, joined the Georgetown Little Theatre, and took up golf. When he was indisputably an old man, he got better and better at golf. For the last 30 years of his life, he enjoyed it enormously, which is to say, it vexed him. Near the end of those 30 years, he tried to teach his eldest son to golf, his only recorded failure as a teacher. In August, he joined a group of his former students, all in their mid-seventies now, for a golf tournament. He loved that.
Larry is survived by his wife of 67 years, Shirley; his children Brian (Michelle), Suzanne (predeceased by husband John), and John (Kathy); his grandchildren Quinn, Ben, James, Nate, Carly, and Katrina; his great-granddaughter Frida; and his sister Linda (David). A Celebration of Life will be held at the Elora Centre for the Arts, 75 Melville Street, Elora, Ontario, on Monday, December 21, 2026, from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to KidSport Greater Victoria in Larry’s memory, helping give local children the opportunity to experience the joy of sport.
