BAILEY Laurence Marie. On August 19, 2004 at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Laurence was born in Algiers North Africa on January 6, 1955, soon before the death of her father Andr Chatry, a colonel in the French Air Force. Due to the Algerian war of independence she went to Paris with her family in the early sixties. While an exchange student at the University of London in applied foreign languages and History from the Sorbonne, she met the man with whom she would share her life and married Dr.Roger Bailey in Paris in 1979. In the early days of their marriage in Vancouver, Laurence worked for Sotheby’s, where she loved putting her extensive knowledge of antiques to good use. In the coming years, four precious children came into their lives. Magali, Caitlin, Olivia and son Nicholas. These were and remain for Laurence her most precious gifts to the world. One of Laurence’s gifts to us was that she was the vibrant center of our family. As her family and friends knew, there was no problem that could not be solved having a cup of tea in her warm welcoming kitchen. Her infinite wisdom, caring and empathetic nature will be missed. Laurence has also left a legacy to a community that was close to her heart. Herfriends all know of her tremendous contribution to educational facilities at various schools, particularly St. Christopher’s Montessori School. Laurence’s final journey began last Saturday. She was supported with laughter and song by her dear friends Cathy Denny, Jane Turpie, John Gayfer, Kathleen O’Donaghue, Pete and Deirdre Chettleburgh, Sandra, David and Devon Vogelaar, Chris Restall, Amy Aucoin, Nick Banks, David Shaw, Robert Thompson, Chris Mills, Hazel Penn, Jocelyn DeMontmorency, Gillian Martin, Bruce Homer, Don Little, Bob Molson, Barbara, Garry, Jason, and Leah Winters, Karen Wallace-Prince, Peter Farrow, Jan and Chang Lim, Karen and Elspeth Finlay, Amy-Lynn Karchut and Aunty Heath, as well as many others.Special thanks to Sister Eileen, Vasana Spogliarich, Dr. Jonni O’Conner, Dr. Nick Van Der Westhuizen, Dr. David Hilton, Dr. Norman and Olive Bailey, Aunty Dar, and the wonderful nursing staff of RP1. And of course, her family. Her grace and elegance in the face of huge adversity is a lesson to us all. We will not forget how you taught us to love, we will not forget to “let go of the fear.” Service will be held at Queenswood Chapel, 2494 Arbutus Road, on Monday, August 23, 2004 at 10:00 am. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Victoria Hospice or the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, 4084 Shelbourne Street, Victoria, B.C., V8S 4P6.
Laurence’s brothers, Bernard Chatry (Francoise) and Jean-Louis Chatry (Bernadette) and family also remember their brother Bertrand (Anne Krief) who passed in February 2002, and her mother Christiane, who left us in May 2004.
