November 20, 1966 – August 12, 2009

Lou was taken from us, suddenly, while enjoying time with his family at Cowichan Lake. Predeceased by Nan, Isabella Fitzpatrick and father in-law Paul Fanning. Lou is lovingly remembered by wife Michelle, sons Mike and Mitchell, parents Dale and Joyce, brother Tim Christy, Kathy, Ashley, and Danielle. His favorite in laws: Jean, Paul, Sean, Teresa, Jim and Molly.

Lou was a hard working mechanic at Canadian Tire, Douglas St. He loved car racing at Western Speedway and riding his Harley with his Buds!

A service to celebrate Lou’s life will be held Friday at McCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson and Vancouver Streets on August 21, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Special thanks to the emergency response team of Cowichan Lake/Youbou.

Flowers gratefully declined. Donations in Lou’s name may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Lou was the best cousin in the whole world. He had a great sense of humour and the ability to make everyone around him sort out the simple things and enjoy life.

Everyone who knew Lou will forever feel a sense of loss. He was a wonderful person and a kind, compassionate man who willingly helped others. He was also a loyal friend.

I hope the best for Michelle and Lou’s sons and I hope some miracle can help my aunt and uncle endure this unbearable loss.

I was shocked to hear of Lou’s passing , I was told just this past weekend.

When I think of Lou and the days of our little Marigold street gang I think of the movie ” Stand by Me “. With ” Big Lou ” at our sides we all felt safe. He provided a never ending amount of entertainment including singing ” Hava Ni Gala “. He made up names for us all, I was Corance , Buzwicks ( Sean Seel ) , Doowey ( Rodney Raneris ), Day ( Daren Prop ) ,Tim Christy ( Chrispy ), Kirk Raneris ( cant remember ) Debi Brown ( DieBoo ). We had so much fun roaming the neighbourhood , I would ride my horse to pick Lou up and collect the others along the way in order and head to the Scout Hall or Tim Christys.
We had the ” Powtiac ” Sean Seels old Pontiac and we all crammed in and went crusing to the Cemetary on a regular basis. Lou would bring his halloween mask and get out and as we drove through he would pop out of the bushes , jump on the hood ,and scare the crap out of us.
I have never heard such a ROAR of laughter come from a human ( It was LOU of course ), sounded like a Lion. My Mother had returned home early to find Daren Prop drunk in our backyard in his undies while Debi so kindly was washing the puke off his pants. Lou saved us with his laughter as my Moms face turned from angry and she started laughing along with him.

I am so very sorry for all his family and close friends , I can imagine the huge dent he has left in every heart who knew and loved him.

An old Pal , Cori-ann Isdahl

Just read today of Lou’s passing! I raced with Lou at Western Speedway between 1991 and 2000; Lou’s name was not one to easily be forgotten, he was a class act, a hard driving competitor and always one of the top five to challenge. I last saw him at Cdn Tire exactly one year ago this month. My condolences to the whole family for their loss, no words to really describe the shock. It was, however, an absolute pleasure to have known Lou, he will be missed.

Dear Michelle, Mike, Mitch, Dale & Joyce,
    REMEMBERING LOU.
It was with shock & sadness that we learned of Lou’s sudden Passing.
The photo says it all. Happy doing what he did best. On 2 recent occasions, this was Lou expressing his Love & Pride for his family & close knit circle of friends, describing with enthusiasm what a great trip to Disneyland he enjoyed with Michelle, Mitch, Campy, Pealy and the kids. Next up was the time he proudly announced son Mike was racing and the delight he took in relating the goodtimes he and the rest of the “Pit crew” were having, being back at the track. Lou was a man who stood tall and with Lucky in hand ” Did it my way “.
We send our heart felt condolences.
    Love,
    Don & Trudie

    To Dale Melin and Family.
I heard about Lou’s passing at the Shamrocks Lacrosse game the other night.
I watched Lou race many years at Western Speedway and he was aways a class guy, good racer, ran up front and was one of the guys to beat. Good to see Mike win a Main Event in the Hornets and I hope Mike can keep racing and be a Champion like his dad was.

To have Lou leave us so suddenly was a shock. To watch how Lou grew into the man he became was an honor. I knew Lou through Demo Racing at Western Speedway. He drove with finesse. Many thought that Lou wasn’t “hitting to pass” – perhaps it wasn’t the destruction that some had in mind but there was rubbing and well…rubbing is racing. He was young then – jet black hair, the grey wool shirt and a big toothy grin. I remember the flat black Monte….the Roach. That old car lasted six or seven seasons. Time went by and Lou’s direction changed. He had a young family and he loved them. Built a new home, became interested in other hobbies. Lou lived life to the fullest. The last time that I saw him was at Samantha and Rich’s wedding. We had placed cameras on every table when my great-nieces were collecting them, they noticed that some of the cameras still had shots left. So they decided to use them up….on Lou. They too fell in love with this great big bear of a man.

I will miss Lou. Didn’t see or hear about him for months at a time but I knew that he was out there. I will now wait to see him on the other side. He was a pleasure to know and one of my heroes.

I met Lou when my son, Chris Hughes came to work at Canadian Tire 9 years ago. Lou became one of Chris’ best friends and he extended that friendship to me. Lou always had a smile and reassuring words when I came with my broken car. He is irreplaceable and I will miss his happy demeanor and kind words.
