Leona Faye Wakeman Mounce 1955 – 2013
It is with a heavy heart that the family of Leona Fay Wakeman Mounce announces her passing on January 19, 2013. After a battle with cancer, Leona passed inpeace surrounded by her loving family, husband and best friend Gerry Mounce, their four boys Richard, Michael, Bradley and Christopher, mother-in-law Beverly Mounce and two daughters-in-law DanielleCowland and Heather Mounce.
Born in 1955 in Victoria, Leona was the daughter of Jean and Len Wakeman. Right from the start she had a love and passion for life, people and animals. In her teenageyears the Wakeman’s moved to the farm on Bryn Rd where they could celebratetheir love for horses and riding. While attending Claremont High SchoolLeona met the love of her life Gerry Mounce. As the high school years faded the two began to build their lives together, their love strengthened and in 1980 they were wed.
Leona received her law degree in 1980 after attending both UVic and UBC and was asked to join the BAR in July of 1981. Over the years her and her husband worked very hard together building their businesses in contracting and law. Although successful and a dedicated worker Leona’s first priority was her family. From 1983 to 1990 the two gave birth to four boys. From that moment on Leona put her heart and soul into making her family’s life as joyous, carefree and loved as possible. Over her thirty-three year marriage the two raised their boys to have a love for life and familyjust as they did.
Her remarkable ability to love, encourage and live life along with each of her loved ones was a true inspiration. To everyone she met she became a confidant and did anything she could think of to support them. What gave her the most joy was experiencing the happiness of others. Her love for life was celebrated by travels and trips which always included as many friends and family as possible. Through the years she has played a mothering role to many pets, friends and family. She was a beautiful human who was a constant reminder of love and a true inspiration for those who knew and admired her.
Although her life was sadly shortened, she made it a goal to enjoy it until the end by surrounding herself with love and constant adventures. Those she leaves behind will truly miss this amazing and devoted daughter, mother, friend and wife. We can take solace in the fact that we know she’s at peace with all her loved ones. Her husband and sons will continue to try every day tocarry on the love, devotion and kindness she instilled in them.
The Mounce family wishes to thank Dr. Brian Winsby and Victoria Hospice for their care and support. The Mounce family would also like to thank everyone for their condolences and kind thoughts during this difficult time. A celebration of Leona’s life will be held at the Mary Winspear Center at Sansha; 2243 Beacon Avenue; Sidney, BC starting at 11 am on February 2nd 2013. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, please give donation to Canadian Cancer Society.
Forever missed and loved by family and friends. Condolences may be offered below.

Sue Hinds and family I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Although I haven’t seen much of Leona since the boys were young, I did pull over a few times on West Saanich Rd. when passing by to have a chat when I saw Leona at the mailbox. Douglas and Critter used to play together when they attended Gingerbread Preschool and Douglas always enjoyed visiting your home on Kersey Rd. I remember Leona as very welcoming and sincere and basically just a very nice person. We wish you peace and comfort through this difficult time. Memories are such a precious thing!
Sincerely, Sue Hinds and family

Patti & Pat Garrett Dear Gerry, Richard, Bradley, Michael, and Critter,
Leona was the quietest cheerleader in the world, and loved others better than most people could ever hop to, in an unselfish and gently way. She was a combination of so many traits…tough, soft-hearted, courageous and humble, with a charming smile to make you feel special. She accepted life and all it threw her way with a realistic, and wise understanding of reality. Leona was compassionate toward others and took her relationships seriously; always putting others first. She ALWAYS had her priorities straight when it came to the boys, didn’t she? We have all benefitted from her gracious hospitality and warmth, as well as her terrific cooking! All of our kids still talk about her Caesar’s salad as being better than any mere restaurant! Her absence will leave a very large hole in your whole family’s lives…from Auntie Bev to the youngest members of the family. We missed her before she passes; knowing the future was to be without her. Gerry, you and the boys were blessed by her existence, and will carry her beautiful spirit forward as you live your lives as you and she did together… dedicated to each other and your extended family and friends. It’s who she was, and who you will ALL be as you honor her memory! We love you all, and are so very, very sorry for your pain and loss; wishing we lived closer and were able to offer more support. Our deepest love, and prayers that God will keep you all in His hands as you take steps forward. With our deepest love and sympathies, Patti, Pat and children

Scott Cunningham Hello Gerry, My father passed recently so I am familiar with the hole in your soul just now. I am heartbroken every time I think of him but I am also buoyed by the memories of the great times we spent together. A good friend put it to me thusly:
“Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal”
My heart goes out to you Gerry. God bless.Scott

Glenn and Leona Douglas We met Leona through her care for her mother, who lived upstairs to us. We watched how she made the comfort and care of Jean her priority, she was truly a remarkable woman. On more than one occasion she shared a laugh with Glenn over his recent horse experiences, always ready with a quick word of encouragement. We are sorry for the loss of this great spirit, and wish the family peace in this time. She was a remarkable woman.
