Martinho went to be with his Lord on January 7, 2017 at the age of 79 years. He was born in Achadinha, Sao Miguel, Acores, Portugal on October 1, 1937. Predeceased by his brother, Bill Furtado; he is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Maria and lovingly remembered by his children, Edward (Jenifer), Lorena (Chris) and Delvino and his grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah, Ethan and Kaleb. He also leaves behind his brothers, sisters and many nieces and nephews.
Martinho immigrated to Canada in 1960 in search of a better life and was a dedicated family man who worked hard to build strong values in his children and grandchildren. Martinho was a lover of music and a passionate gardener who devoted 50 years to the Butchart Gardens, bringing joy to the millions of people who visited the gardens.
Prayers will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4635 Elk Lake Drive, Victoria, BC V8Z 5M2 on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 7:00 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Father Manuel Cardoso officiating. Entombment to follow at the Royal Oak Mausoleum.
Flowers are gratefully declined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Tiberio de Frias I am so sad – I remember clearly the days working with Martin and my dad (Manuel) during my later teen years in the Sunken Gardens. Martin was a gentle man with a quick smile and loved to laugh. We all laughed with him – My family and I will miss him dearly.
