January 3 1922 – January 4 2014

Mamie was born and raised in the Shoal Lake/Oakburn district of Manitoba, where she completed High School before attending Normal School in Winnipeg.

Mamie initially taught in several schools in rural Manitoba before boarding a train for Toronto in the early 1950s!  While teaching full time, Mamie completed a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Toronto, and advanced education in Library Science.

Mamie enjoyed her life in Toronto.  She regularly attended live theatre, the symphony, lunch at the Royal York Hotel after church, and of course:  Blue Jays games.  Mamie was a member of the Ladies Golf Club of Toronto and traveled numerous times to Bermuda for golf and sunshine!!  She loved to travel, and particularly enjoyed her many cruises over the years.

Mamie retired from teaching in 1982 at age 60 finishing her career as the teaching librarian at Kane Middle School.  She then volunteered for many years at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, both driving patients to appointments, as well as ushering patients throughout the facility to a myriad of departments.  At the age of 80, Mamie moved to Victoria to be closer to family. She never tired of going for drives out to Sooke, and always enjoyed the return trip past the cruise ships docked along Dallas Road.

Mamie was predeceased by her parents Hector and Annie MacLean, and her siblings:  Agnes, Bud, and Margie.  Mamie’s youngest sister Jackie (Frank) Gertsma passed the following day on January 5.  Mamie is survived by her brother-in-law Frank of Sooke, sister-in-law Mona MacLean, and numerous nieces and nephews throughout Western Canada.

Mamie’s family would like to thank:  Murray Covlin, her “Super” on St. Andrews for his kindness and vigilance; The watchful neighbours of James Bay, particularly the staff at the Bank of Montreal, the James Bay Inn, and the Heron Rock where Mamie was a “regular”; All the wonderful people at Amica at Douglas House who adopted her and loved her as their very own “Auntie Mamie”; and lastly…Hart House-the people and the pets – for the gentle, respectful and dignified care of our beautiful Mamie.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Wednesday, January 15, 2014 from 2-4 pm. at Bill Mattick’s Restaurant at Cordova Bay Golf Course.  Tributes if desired may be made to the Alzheimer Society of BC.  Condolences may be offered to the family below.
