It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Mary Lou Fraser on August 31, 2008. Mary Lou was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 26, 1930, the first child of Dr. Roy Fraser and Jean Hawkins Fraser. Her early childhood was spent in Winnipeg and she moved to Vancouver in 1938. Mary Lou attended school in Vancouver and Victoria and graduated from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing in 1956. After graduation, she worked in Prince Rupert before becoming a Nursing Sister in the Royal Canadian Navy. Following her term of naval service, she attended the University of British Columbia, following which she spent most of her nursing career with the Indian and Northern Health Services in such diverse places as Cambridge Bay in the Arctic, Mount Curry, BC, Cowichan and as a Special Projects Nurse. The last years of her career were spent with Public Service Health at HMC Dockyard. Following retirement, Mary Lou resided in Sidney, BC where she was active in palliative care and in her church. Mary Lou was predeceased by her parents and brother-in-law, Dr. Amir Ahsan. She is survived by her only sister, Margaret Airdrie Ahsan of Winnipeg; nephew, Jamil Ahsan (Sadaf) of Baltimore, MD; a niece, Dr. Maryam Ahsan of Chicago, IL; two special friends, Roger Bastarache-Collet of Dieppe, NB, Aline Jobin-Fowlow of Victoria; several cousins; many friends and the clients she cared for deeply.

Cremation has taken place at her request with interment to take place in Winnipeg among the Selkirk Settlers from whom she descended. Flowers are gratefuly declined. Should anyone so wish, a donation in Mary Lou’s name would be gratefully appreciated by The Sanctuary, Open Door Spiritualist Church, 1600 Cook Street, Victoria, BC, V8T 3P1. A Memorial Service will be held at The Sanctuary Open Door Spiritualist Church on Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 1:00 pm.
