March 12, 1915- December 31, 2013

In loving memory of Oliver Rendel Summers who passed away peacefully at Joan Crescent Manor. Oliver was predeceased by his loving wife Gladys Esther Summers (nee Fitz-George) November 2009. Born in Hackney, North London, Oliver attended City of London School and London University studying Physics and Math with a specialty in Metallurgy. Enlisted to make armaments for Britain in the 2nd World War, Oliver met his soul mate and married Gladys on December 5, 1940 while the Germans were bombing London. Moving to Toronto in 1949 Oliver established the Summers Manufacturing Company and developed the heat induction of metal leading the way for hardening the edge of metal in cam and crank shafts. A lifelong business success still operating today. In 1969 Oliver sold the company to the staff and set out on his true love, having a 40 foot diesel pusher yacht built in Scotland and shipped to Victoria while Gladys and he embarked on a one year world vacation. Upon their return, Oliver and Gladys sailed from Victoria to Hawaii using the stars and a sextant to navigate. Oliver spent many years with the Canadian Power Squadron and as a member and Commodore of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. A service and celebration of life will be held at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets, Victoria on January 10, 2014 at 1:30 pm with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to any of the food banks in the Victoria area in his name. Oliver’s desire to once again be with his life partner and soul mate has arrived. May they rest in peace!
