In loving memory of a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother Oye Lin Lum, who passed away peacefully on August 5 at the Victoria Chinatown Care Centre, surrounded by her adoring family.
Oye Lin was born in Toisan Village, Guangdong China in 1930 during a time of devastating hardship for the people of the region. In 1952, her husband Leslie Suey Wang immigrated to Victoria BC, Canada to prepare a new life for Oye Lin and their infant son Paul.
Years later, Oye Lin and Paul were reunited with Leslie in Canada. Oye Lin and Leslie, both known for their modesty and generosity, worked incredibly hard and sacrificed everything to raise five children.
Oye Lin’s kitchen was always filled with the aromatic scents of Pei Dan Jook, Joong, and Tong Yuen soup. Her gardens were lined with beautiful burgundy peonies, lush zucchinis, giant green beans, and a never-ending supply of juicy tomatoes. Food was Oye Lin and Leslie’s love language, as providing nourishment for their family brought them a great sense of pride.
Oye Lin’s Chinese astrological animal was the Metal Horse; which is famously recognized for its determination, resilience, sense of humour, and for being well-loved among friends.
Oye Lin is survived by: sons Paul (Donna), Bill (Laura), John, Dan and daughter Janice (David); grandsons Michael (Rachel), Bryan and Kevin; granddaughters Sian, Emily and Ayva; great-granddaughters Isabelle and Madelyn. She is also survived by nephew in-law Sunny (Wendy) and family; and will be missed by extended family in Hong Kong, USA and Canada.
A memorial service is scheduled for August 27, 2026. Viewing will be at 1:00 pm, with service to follow from 2:00-3:00 pm in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria BC.
