It is with sincere sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother and bubba, Patricia Joyce Horsfield (nee Whitebread), on January 11th 2010 at the age of 76. She was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on July 12, 1933. Later, with five children at home (Hugh Doherty), Patricia graduated in 1966 with the first Quo Vadis registered nursing class. From there, she rose steadily through the medical profession until she retired as Assistant Administrator of Highland Lodge, LTC (Langley). Throughout a lifetime of giving and caring, she was a past president of CWL, founded and served as Akela for the 273 cub pack, a Kinette, a founding member of the Northern Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation, established the first palliative care unit for AIDS patients in Western Canada, and other acts of charity and selfless service too numerous to mention.

Patricia passed away while surrounded by her entire family, from across the country, with much love in the room. She will be dearly missed by her husband of 43 years Peter, children Brian (Louise), Timothy (Victoria), Patrick (Barb) , Shannon (Cam), Andrew (Christine), Melanie and Gillian; grandchildren Tyler, Trisha (Shawn), Elise (Kevin), Amanda, Sean, Tristan, Nathaniel, Carson, Graydon, Neisha, Marie, and Thomas; as well as great granddaughter Cadence.

“Close your eyes and listen to the choirs of the angels.” Love from your children.

A special thank you to the doctors and staff at the Victoria Hospice and the BC Cancer Agency, as well as the support and service of the staff at the Medicine Shoppe in Parksville and Victoria for the care our special lady received.

Visitation at MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at 7:30pm with Prayers to follow at 8:30pm. A Funeral Mass will take place at ST. PATRICK’S CHURCH, 2060 Haultain Street on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 12:10 pm. In lieu of flowers, Patricia would appreciate donations to Victoria Hospice Society or to her Foster Child’s Education Fund (Chalice). These donations can be forwarded to Peter Horsfield at 868 Ballenas Road West, Parksville, BC V9P 1S8.
“You were the wind beneath my wings.” Love from your Don Pedro.

Dear Peter and family, Nancy and I are deeply sorry for your loss. We have many fond memories of Patricia; she always showed a mother’s joy, concern and jubilation towards me and my family and everyone who crossed her path. The loss of Patricia has also deeply affected my parents John and Therese and we’ve been praying for her and know she is living in eternal happiness and peace with our lord and with friends and family that have passed away before, peace and God bless.

Dear Peter, Shannon, Cam, Carson, Graydon, Melanie, Jill, Tim, Vicky, Tristan, Nathaniel, Hugh and all the other family members I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting in Pat’s loving family. She lived with integrity, joy, compassion and kindness and made my life warmer and brighter, with her smile and generous inclusion.

I don’t get the newspaper and didn’t realize that we’d lost Pat until late Thurs. or I would have been there to pay my respects and celebrate her life on the 13th and 14th. I have been thinking of her, and of you all. I heard the song “If I Had A Hammer” on the 11th and on the 14th. It occured to me that Pat: “sang out danger, sang out warning and sang out the love between her brothers and her sisters, all over this land.” I share your sorrow and send my love to you all.

    Dear Peter and family
I am at a loss of words just sitting here thinking of Patte. Her laugh was contageous and her life was always filled with loving family. I passed the Alberts Childrens hospital yesterday and thought of all the hours Patte worked to see one of these built. Even though we are not there with you our hearts are with you every step of the way.
May the grace of God watch over you to-day and always.
With Love Jean & Doug Henderson
