Paul was born in Wellington, New Zealand on January 6, 1939.  He graduated from Victoria University of New Zealand with a BSc in 1962 before coming to UBC in Vancouver, BC to study Forestry. After receiving his BSF in 1965 he worked briefly for BC Forestry Service before returning to New Zealand in 1966.  While studying at UBC he met and married his wife, Shirley in 1963.

Paul and Shirley returned to Victoria, BC in 1968 and Paul took a job at the Forestry Lab on Burnside Road for several years.  He was instrumental in establishing a Research Project on the Sayward Forest near Campbell River.  Paul returned to BC Forestry Service in 1975 until he had to retire early in 1990 following a vehicle accident that left him with a brain injury.

Paul is survived by his wife, Shirley of nearly 60 years; two daughters, Jennifer and Heather; son, Peter and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his sister, Elaine.

Paul passed into the arms of Jesus on November 8, 2021 following complications from surgery.  He was a strong man of faith who loved his family, his friends, his dogs, his books, and God’s beautiful world.

    Dear Shirley
I just found out that Paul passed away last year. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family.

My Lloyd suffers from Lewy’s Bodies Dementia and is in a care home in Comox. Today he asked about Pail which prompted me to do an internet search.

It is comforting to know that Paul is safe with Jesus but I know the loneliness of being left behind.

    God bless, Vicki Erickson

“A few minutes ago every tree was excited, bowing to the roaring storm, waving, swirling, tossing their branches in glorious enthusiasm like worship. But though to the outer ear these trees are now silent, their songs never cease. Every hidden cell is throbbing with music and life, every fiber thrilling like harp strings, while incense is ever flowing from the balsam bells and leaves. No wonder the hills and groves were God’s first temples.”-John Muir
