Paul passed away at the age of 81 leaving behind many family and friends who loved him and will forever miss him.

Paul was predeceased by his parents, Luis and Germina Almeida; brothers, Carlos and Ezekiel, and sisters, Isabel and Noemia. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Maria Lourdes, his 3 children: Mark (Alynn), Lisa (Sean) and Aaron (Karissa); 6 grandchildren: Aidyn, Harrison, Avalon, Lola, Mia and Mateo and by his sister Eduarda.

Paul was born on November 3, 1941 in Agua de Pau, Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal. He immigrated to Canada with his wife Maria in January 1969 to join other members of his family to start a new life in Victoria, BC.

He started working with his brother Carlos as a barber, and eventually went on to open his own first salon at Hillside Centre called Changing Times Hair Studio. Over the years he continued to grow the business, adding another 4 salons and 1 esthetics studio: La Moda, Bella Moda, Moda Fina, Changing Times Tillicum Mall and Bonita Esthetics. He worked behind the chair until the age of 77 until his legs could not hold him up any longer. He then downsized the company to one salon with all his very best stylists and his son Aaron and daughter Lisa taking over all managing operations. That salon is Bella Moda Hair Studio at Hillside Centre, which is still thriving to this day. Paul was in the salon the day before his passing, still doing some background accounting and banking duties.

In Paul’s spare time, he was a soccer referee for many years, and was an avid dog trainer with his son Aaron. He loved tending to his property and garden. His son, Mark adopted his passion for working outdoors and now has a business of his own as a Stone Mason and Landscaper. Above all, Paul loved his home and his family.  He always had a glass of wine for anyone that visited. According to Paul, his homemade wine was the best in the west.

Paul’s legacy is his humour, smile, laugh and love of a good (bad) joke. His warmth and fun nature was known to many in the community. He will be missed by all that had the privilege to know him.

A Funeral Service to honour Paul, will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at 2:00pm with burial to follow at the Royal Oak Burial Park next door. Friends are then invited to return to the Sequoia Centre for a reception.

Paul was one of the longest merchants at Hillside Centre (Bella Moda) .. our paths usually crossed in the morning as Paul was visiting the salon and I was taking our office dog out for a walk. We always shared a few minutes together and meeting him was often the highlight of my day. Paul will be missed by a lot of people here at Hillside .. I was lucky to know him.

My deepest condolences to all of Paul’s family, friends & coworkers. I had the pleasure of working with Paul for many years as his Sales Rep. At one time we met weekly in his little office. Paul always had a story to share, we’d talk about family, his latest interests (sometimes business) the good ‘ol days & how much the industry has changed.

He will be missed by all.

I used to take Ian and Gordon to the hillside barber shop and Paul would cut their hair. He was the nicest man. He would always talk about his children and how ironic that one of the members of a family close to us would marry his daughter Lisa. A lovely man!!!
