Peter George McNeil, a dearly loved father and stepdad, gumpy and grandad, died December 27, 2023.

An only child born in England in 1941, Peter was raised by his dad and “nan” after his mother passed away when he was four. He finished school in England then moved to join his dad and stepmum in Edmonton in 1958. There he became a Chartered Accountant and worked at an accounting firm before switching to teaching accounting at NAIT.

Peter met and married Diana, and they bought a home in St. Albert where they welcomed the birth of daughter Marnie and son Warren. The family moved west to Victoria where Peter joined Camosun’s new School of Business in 1971. Daughter Sherry was born in Victoria, and they made Metchosin their home for many years with summers spent at Witty’s beach.

Peter and Diana parted ways in 1985 and Peter moved to Stadacona Centre the following year, where he was fortunate to meet his second wife Claudia when she and daughter Sherri moved in next door. Throughout their 33 years together he embraced his extended network of family and friends, sharing travels, games, Oscar parties, beer festivals, reunions, wine and laughs. He and Claudia were married in 2000 in Vegas by Elvis (of course).

Peter was an avid golfer, cricket player, dancer, whistler, curler and tennis player who loved to tease, watch the Arsenal Gunners, play games, and eat Count Chocula. Peter’s memory was challenged by Alzheimer’s in later years but it didn’t erode his charm or sense of humour. He was deeply saddened to lose Claudia in 2019 but will be reunited with her now.

A celebration of life will be held on May 4 at 2 pm at Cedar Hill Golf Course.

In memory of Peter please consider a donation to the Peter McNeil Accounting Award at the Camosun College Foundation, or to the Alzheimer Society of BC.
