Ralph Rudiger Erwin Braun passed away peacefully on January 12, 2024, following a long battle with cancer. Ralph was born on May 28, 1952 in Calgary, Alberta to Erwin and Alide. Ralph married his college sweetheart, Maureen, on August 31, 1974.

Ralph loved to help his family and friends, and be an active member of his community, whether in Chilliwack, at school at UBC, in Kitimat and Kemano, BC where he worked for Alcan for over 35 years, or in Victoria, where he and Maureen retired in 2009. Ralph loved to offer his knowledge and experience to anyone in need – Ralph volunteered at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Kitimat, and for his housing complex in his later years.

Ralph is survived by his wife, Maureen, his two sons Neil (Erin) and Kyle (Wendy), his three sisters, Gisela (Roy), Linda and Pamela, and other extended family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Myeloma Research Group and the Saanich Peninsula Hospital & Healthcare Foundation.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Ralph never sat still! He was one of those men, always out “puttering”, usually volunteering his time for the strata we live in. When it came time for him to use a walker, we were amazed how he still managed to get out for walks everyday. Imagine our horror when one day we saw him on the roof of his townhouse! There was something he wanted to fix. We all saw the volunteer time Ralph put in but I didn’t appreciate to what extent until I volunteered to help maintain the strata pool. When we weren’t sure what to do, we referred to Ralph’s documentation. Every procedure was documented, photographed and so easy to follow. Only an engineering mind could create what he did.
We will miss you on so many levels Ralph—neighbour, friend and someone to go to when we have questions about the strata.
Steve and I would like to extend out condolences to Maureen, his boys, their partners, his sisters and other extended family.

Just learning of this now and suffice to say it saddens me to hear of Ralph’s passing. I knew Ralph from his days at Kitimat. Ralph was a great man and a leader who brought out the best in everyone he worked with. Never to look for fault he provided growth opportunities for those who he lead, always promoting and praising them publicly.

One of the cadre of true Aluminum Legends if ever there was one. It was a privilege Ralph. You truly did make the world a better place.
