Born in Glasgow, Scotland on

June 9, 1934 – October 7, 2013

On October 7, 2013, a crisp Fall morning, Shiona Catherine Rodger passed away, bathed in the morning sunshine streaming through her hospital window.  She was predeceased by her Brother, Neil Buchanan , and her Husband Normand Rodger, to whom she had been married for thirty eight years. Shiona was a keen bridge player, an ardent tennis fan, and an avid bird watcher.  In her earlier years, a perfect day would commence by dropping Norm off for a round of golf and she, armed with binoculars, would set out on a birding adventure. Shiona and Normand loved to travel to the New England States each Fall to see and taste the brilliance and splendour of the colours.  She often fondly reflected on her memories of those treasured times.

Shiona was dressed in gentleness.  She prided herself in being a good steward of her resources.  As her mobility declined, Shiona took great delight in the smallest details of life.  She knew intuitively that it is here that the flavour of life is savoured.  In the end, Shiona reflected so much grace.  As we gathered around her bedside, to reassure her of our presence, she would muster every bit of her last strength and courage to grace us with her radiant smile and then utter “I know”.

An immeasurable debt of gratitude is owed to her friend and companion, Rachel Omule, who steadfastly remained at her bedside.  The attentive care of Dr. Ted Rosenberg, Liza Zacharias and his nursing team made her last years at Parkwood comfortable.  Her Friends and Neighbors at Wedgewood Estates popped into Parkwood to cheer her on.  The nursing team at “We Care” were kind and compassionate throughout their daily visits.

The Autumn leaves dazzle us with their splendid colours: crimson red, deep yellow, and brilliant bronze in countless variations.  Shortly after having reflected their unspeakable beauty, the Autumn leaves fall to the ground and die. “The barren trees remind us that winter is near.  As we look at the barren trees, and remember those who have died, let us be grateful for the beauty we saw in them and wait hopefully for a new Spring.”

At Shiona’s request, no formal Memorial Service will be conducted.  On line condolences to her Family Overseas and Friends may be offered below

  • Shiona Rodger

On behalf of the Saanich Newcomers Club, known as SNAC,
I wish to extend my sincere condolence to the family and her godson. I knew Normand as well as Shiona and enjoyed a good and competitive game of Bridge with her on several occasions.
Shiona was an early member of our dinner group as well, and we always looked forward to seeing them on these occasions. God speed Shiona,
    My sincere regards,
Phyl Greenaway, Exec. member for Member’s News.

Shiona was a great neighbor, always welcoming with a cheery disposition and ready to laugh at lifes little foibles.A gentle soul yet underneath this exterior there was a very competitive spirit. She was a gracious hostess and her neighbors at Wedgewood will miss gatherings at “5202”.
May she be reunited with her beloved Normand and rest in peace.

Shiona will be sadly missed by all her friends of the Engineers’ Wives Association of Victoria of which she was a long-time member. We will always remember her friendliness and her enthusiastic, cheery personality. We send our sincere condolences to her family.

  • Gail Libera

Shiona will be sadly missed by her many Wedgewood friends. We used to enjoy a cup of tea while we played canasta in her home, with our kind and warm friend. We could always count on Shiona to supply napkins for everyone while we shared coffees in the Village too. Sincere condolences to her Scottish family and her godson, whom she talked about all of the time.
