We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Vance Russell Horn, who passed away at the age of 81 on January 17, 2024, in Victoria, BC. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Vance was born on August 6, 1942, in Sheffield, England. He grew up in South Yorkshire and attended Abbotsholme School before he and his family immigrated to Canada in 1957 when Vance was 15. They spent a short time in Toronto and then settled in Regina, Saskatchewan where Vance attended Sheldon Williams Collegiate. After graduation in 1960, he worked in banking, sales and finance, eventually earning the position of Vice President of Finance for Lion Business Machines / IKON where he worked for many years.

He met his wife, Vera, in 1966 at an inter-branch CIBC holiday party where they both worked. Vance and Vera were married on June 22, 1968, in Moosomin, Saskatchewan. Later, they moved to Alberta. First to Edmonton, then to Calgary, and back again to Edmonton (Sherwood Park), where they raised two daughters, Jennifer and Jillian.

Vance was a kind and generous man who always had great zest for life. He loved spending time with his wife and daughters and was a devoted grandfather to his grandchildren. He enjoyed music, restoring wooden furniture, boating, and was a dedicated volunteer. He will be remembered for his piano playing and his infectious laughter.

He is survived by his wife, Vera; his daughters, Jennifer and Jillian; his son-in-law, Jacob; and his granddaughters, Suzanna, Louisa, Skye, Eden, and Storm. He is survived by his sister Julia (Roger), his brother Barry (Bev) and their children Elsa and Julia.

A private service for family and close friends will be held on February 16 at 2:00 pm at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or Beckley Farm Lodge in memory of Vance.

Our hearts are heavy, but we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace. He will always be remembered for his love, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family.

Rest in peace, Vance.

We were very saddened to hear about Vance’s passing. Both he and Vera were amongst our first “new friends” when we moved to the Maple Bay area, and they made us feel so very welcome. I can recall countless fun evenings spent with them. Vance’s quick smile and twinkling eyes were only two of his most memorable characteristics. The third would have to be his red, sparkling sequin high-top runners. In addition, Vance had a great sense of humour, quick to laugh, and incredibly gifted musically. He voluntarily shared his keyboard passion with so many of us. Thank you for the wonderful memories, Vance.
