March 10, 1928 – September 5, 2012
The third period buzzer at the Memorial Arena has finally sounded for Bert. His fight against Parkinson’s and Alzheimers diseases was long and courageous. Dad left us Wednesday, September 5th with his children by his side. Predeceased by his loving wife, Eleanor; brothers, Howard and Harry and his niece, Coleen. He will be greatly missed by his three children, Ted (Kathy) Waring, Deb (Al) Byrne, Pat (Dave) Burgoyne; his eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; his sister, Ann (Ron) Coggan; nieces; nephews; loyal best friend, Don Wakelyn, as well as many lifelong cherished friends. The Victoria sports community will mourn the passing of such a wonderful man. From coaching kids hockey in the early 50’s, the many baseball teams he worked with in the 60’s that he not only taught the skills of how to play the game at a very high level, but imparted life’s lessons to his charges. You could find him in the timekeeping and penalty box of Victoria hockey and lacrosse teams for over 50 years, as well as Sandown Raceway picking out the ponies. Past District Deputy DDGM, Victoria District No. 1, Past Master of St. Andrew’s Lodge #49, Present Member of Goldstream Lodge and Member of Scottish Rights. Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to all the loving and caring staff at Broadmead Lodge.
A Memorial Service will be held in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at 2:00 pm. Please wear your favourite sports jersey! Donations in Bert’s name would be appreciated to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. http://www.alzheimerbc.org/

Joy & Don Mann Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Bert’s family. Although we personally had only met Bert several times, we know he was admired and respected by his family and friends. I too lost my brother this year but like Bert he had been very ill and now there is no suffering. Cherish the memories, he will always be with you! The obituary was very well done and you felt like you got to know him personally by the read. Love, Joy & Don Mann

Gerry Lister Dear Family Members;
I was sadden to hear the news of Bert’s passing. Bert Waring was a large part of my life, from Baseball in Connie Mack League at Windsor Park and in to the Masonic Family.
Bert assisted so many people through his life and I can only hope, that those whose life’s he touched will remember him and live in his memory.
It was Bob Burrows Sr. and Bert Waring that brought Baseball Scouts to the Victoria area, to see the product they so believed in. Many young player’s, myself included, benefited from these efforts.
For those who remember the good times at Windsor Park, with John McKeachie in one dugout and Bert in the other, it was something to behold!! Rest in peace my friend.

It was always fun to see Mr. Holroyd, Mr. Wakelyn and your father at the Tim Horton’s by Reynold’s High School. We would see each other on Sunday mornings around 8 am. Your father, like the other gentlemen mentioned, was a wonderful contributor to Victoria’s sporting community. Shari and I offer you our condolences.
