Almeda Mildred Scott (nee Lindstrom)

April 25, 1927 – October 23, 2013

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Almeda Scott at 86 years of age. Predeceased by her beloved husband, Blayney, Almeda is survived by her children, Ian (Louise), Rosalind, Kevin (Rosemary) and Megan (Bill) and by grandchildren, Courtenay, Eric, Hanna, Anna, Alexandra and Graham. She will be dearly missed by many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Born in Wadena, Saskatchewan to Ernest and Sophia Lindstrom, Almeda grew up on the family farm as one of eleven children. After graduating from Wadena High School, she, along with her two younger sisters, joined their eldest sister in Victoria in 1945. She later met Blayney Scott and they married in 1951. As newlyweds they moved aboard the Geni, a 36 foot troller that Blayney had built and fished the west coast of Vancouver Island. In 1952 they decided to move ashore in Victoria to start a family as well as a new business, Scott Plastics Ltd. Almeda managed to balance the hard work of a fledgling business along with the demands of raising four young children and eventually saw Scott Plastics become the world wide manufacturer of fishing and outdoor products that it is today. Almeda was a gifted seamstress, dress designer and knitter. She loved music, singing alto in several local choirs, as well as being an accomplished pianist. She played many sports as a young girl and eagerly followed the athletic and artistic accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. For over 40 years, she enjoyed cruising local waters on the family boat, Messenger III. Despite the top-loading fridge, she produced countless meals from the tiny galley but more importantly, the coffee pot was always on for those who happened by. She was a true pioneer and leaves a huge legacy, but it was her warm and friendly way that endeared her to all who knew her. Thanks to all the staff at Saanich Peninsula Hospital Palliative Care Unit, especially Peter.

A Memorial Tea will be held at The Beach House, 5109 Cordova Bay Rd., Victoria, B.C, on Wednesday, Nov. 13 from 2-4 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Palliative Care Unit. Condolences may be offered to the family below.

  3. Please accept my deepest sympathy. I am shocked and saddened to learn of Almeda’s death. Bill and I counted ourselves lucky to be among the friends of Blaney and Almeda. Blayney and I were classmates and Bill and Blayney both loved boats. My sympathy goes to all the family. Sheila MacDonald

  4. Hi Scott family, So very sad to hear of your mom’s passing. Many fond memories of your mom and of course your dad over the years especially at 306 Dallas. Your mom introduced me to a cup of her “cowboy coffee” which always seemed to be on the stove and really good. You guys are really lucky to have had such wonderful parents and I’m sure anyone who ever had the privilege of meeting them over the years felt lucky as well. Take care and be healthy and happy!!! Cheers to you all. Steve and Donna Myers

  5. To Ian, Roz, Kevin, Megan and all your families.
My condolences to all of you with the fondest of memories on board Messenger III. I’ll always remember the best “cowboy” coffee…as your Mom called it…. while fishing. Special times with special people.

    Take care, Casey

  6. Almeda befriended me when I joined the Newcombe Singers after moving to Victoria 25+ years ago. Almeda asked me how long I had been in Canada, instead of just stating the number of years, I told her the exact date. We celebrated that date and for many years she gave or sent a card of congratulations which always included a little Canadian flag. With fondest memories, Jean

  8. Dear Roz, Megan, Ian and Kevin,

Your mum was the very definition of salt of the earth, and I still see her beautiful smile. Your home was a refuge for all of us. My heart goes out to you – take care of each other.

  9. I was very sad to read that Almeda had passed away. I first met Almeda in 1948 when I attended church on Sunday mornings in a house in Cordova Bay. The entire assembly consisted of a minister, a very old man who played the harmonium, my parents, myself, Almeda and her sister! Many years later while cruising with our respective families we found ourselves moored beside “Messenger” in Ballet Bay where we had taken shelter during a storm. We were invited aboard “Messenger” and Almeda and I were both very surprised and delighted to meet again after so many years. This was the start of a wonderful friendship with the Scott family including many happy times on “Messenger” and at their house on Dallas Road. I never felt that Almeda was given adequate acknowledgement for the huge amount of work that she performed cheerfully and with seemingly casual competence as hostess at home and on the boat and her stalwart support of Blaney and the business. With loving memories; Alan Lester and family.

  10. Goodbye Almeda. You were an important and joyous part of my personal history. I am certain that I am not alone in this feeling because you made everyone feel listened to, loved and appreciated, remembering small details of their lives and sharing yours.
I will keep your broad smile and ready, musical laugh with me as I know that you always kept a song in your heart.
Sincere condolences to Roz, Megan, Kevin and Ian.
What a privilege to have shared such a mother.
