Val passed away after a hard-fought battle with cancer on January 8, 2018.  Val was born on November 30, 1937 in Liverpool, England.  She leaves behind Ralph, her loving husband of over 50 years, her two daughters Heather (Denny) and Robin (Scott) and two granddaughters.  She will be missed immensely by friends and family.

Val began her journey to Canada in 1964, while working her way to Australia with her friend Ruth.  Their first stop was Toronto, where she met Ralph.  They married a year later and settled in Winnipeg, where she continued her career as an executive secretary.  She spent summers on Lake of the Woods, where they built the family cottage and continued to do so, even after moving to Victoria in 1993. Val especially loved to dance, garden, travel, socialize with her friends and spend time with family.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sherman and Dr. Gellar, the nurses from Island Health and Victoria Hospice for all the care they provided for Val.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Val to the BC Cancer Agency, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, BC, V8R 6V5.

A Celebration of Val’s Life will be held at Windsor Park Pavilion, 2451 Windsor Road, Victoria, BC on Sunday, April 8, 2018, at 2:00 pm.

    One person, one lifetime, so many beautiful memories – too many to mention except for the special ones – your meeting Val when we all lived in Toronto and how quickly you realized that you wanted t0 spend the rest of your life with her — if only she’d move to Winnipeg! and she did!!.
    You and Val enjoyed many years of love and laughter with friends and family. How fortunate you are to have Heather and Robin and their families to carry on Val’s legacy.
    I stood up for you at your wedding as you did for me. We’ve been thru a lot together over the years – and once more I’m here for you as your best friend.
    With much love and cherished memories. Bob (and Barb too}

    I’m so very sad to hear of your loss. She will be missed by so many. I remember her as always being full of energy and smiles. And when I think of her, it’s in your cottage. A lot of great memories there. But I also remember her making us snacks in your old kitchen in your house in St. Vital when we were little. So long ago, but it seems like just yesterday at the same time. Big hugs and lots of love to everyone in your family. You will all be in our thoughts.

  • Jenny Hasenack Bru

    I remember Val’s smiles and laughter and stories shared over drinks at the cottage. She loved to share in good times and strive for the best. We are so sorry to hear she had such a battle with cancer recently and that it took her from this world. She will be deeply missed.
