It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Andy da Silva on the morning of Monday the 8th of June at the age of 87.

Andy was a devoted husband, father, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was known for his willingness to help others, his skill with his hands, and his generous nature. Whether it was fabricating a railing, fireplace, barbeque or helping someone fix up their yard, house or truck he was always ready to lend a hand. Many people continue to enjoy things he built or repaired over the years, a lasting reminder of the care he put into everything he did.

Immigrating to Canada from Hong Kong when he was 17 with his parents Alfredo and Filomena following his sister Paddy, he has called Victoria (and for a while Nanaimo) his home since. Shortly after, his sister Vilma followed along as well, while his brother Jackie settled in the UK.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mae, daughters Denise and Zena, son Ricky, 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He follows his sister Patricia Cassidy who passed in April this year.

His principal career was that of a welder and fabricator working for the local shipyards, sawmills, and his own business.

He had a passion for cooking and was an exceptional cook. Family and friends looked forward to gathering around his table, where he took pride in preparing meals and sharing them with the people he loved. Some of the best memories of time spent together were made over food he prepared.

Andy also enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends. He was known affectionately as the “Monkey Man” due to his collection of monkeys, a hobby that brought him a great deal of enjoyment and became one of his many trademarks.

Above all, he valued his family and the relationships he built throughout his life. He leaves behind many cherished memories and will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and willingness to help anyone in need.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 2nd, 10AM at McCall Gardens. Though he is gone, the memories he created, the meals he shared, and the many things he built with his hands and his heart will continue to live on in the lives of those who loved him.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Andy was a large part of my growing up. His family and mine would do Sunday Mass and Dimsum or Chinese. Always helping me on projects over the years. What a great man he was. Glad Ricky had him to look up to. Will be missed
