May 13, 1941 – June 16, 2023

Anne Beatty (née Hoy) passed away on June 16, 2023 in Victoria, British Columbia. She was born in East Orange, New Jersey on May 13, 1941 and grew up in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She married her husband, Edward Joseph Beatty, on August 17, 1963.

Predeceased by her mother, Mary Hoy, and her brother, Dan Hoy; Anne is survived by her husband, Ed; her aunt Marie; her sister-in-law, Toni Hoy and niece Samantha; children, Ned (Perrin), Ken, and Andrew; grandchildren, Reilly, Dalles, and Alden, and the family dog, Kihei. She will be missed by many other relatives and friends.

At the beginning of their life together, Anne and Ed moved many times while Ed was enlisted in the US Army. Her son Ned was born during their posting in Tacoma, Washington. While posted in SHAPE, Belgium, her son Ken was born. Shortly after, the family moved to Columbus, Georgia, where Anne made some of her longest lasting friendships.

In 1976, Anne and Ed moved a final time to Victoria, BC, and her son Andrew was born two years later. Anne and Ed established a beautiful life together in Victoria, raising their family and some cherished cats. As well as managing the Victoria Ortho Lab for over 20 years, Anne was an active leader in her community with ties to the Holy Cross Church Parish, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, Operatic Society, Victoria Ballet Theatre, Storytellers Guild, book clubs, and Goward House. She was an avid reader of literature, an art connoisseur, a fabulous cook, a CBC radio listener, a fan of Leonard Cohen, and a sharp bridge player.

A service for Anne will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church (4049 Gordon Head Road, Victoria, BC), followed by a reception at Holy Cross for friends and family to celebrate her life.

A live stream of the service will also be available. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the March of Dimes or the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.

  1. My condolences to Ed, Ned, Kenneth and Andrew and extended families. I am so sorry for your loss. Anne was such a great friend to my Mom especially. I have such fond fond memories of dinner parties and serious bridge games with a lot of laughter that Anne seemed to always be in the middle of… I’m sorry I didn’t hear about the service until now, but I will always remember Anne fondly.

  2. The lovely service for Anne at Holy Cross Church has just ended and it was indeed a beautiful tribute to a dear and wonderful person. We are privileged to have known Anne and her family for over 50 years, dating back to the time they lived in Europe. For my two years as their neighbor in SHAPE, Belgium, Anne and Ed were always larger-than-life people in my world, both professionally and socially, and our friendship has endured through their moves to Georgia and then to their adopted home in Victoria. In fact, it is not really their adopted home… though she is an American, Anne and her family are true Canadian citizens in every way. Anne was always able to reach out easily to make new friends all over again, wherever her family’s moves would transport her, but I know that in her heart Canada became her real home. Anne was a loving and gracious person, a loyal and dedicated partner to her husband Ed, and a fabulously caring mom to her three boys. To us, she has been a true friend in every sense of the word, always a source of wisdom and inspiration. Oh, and she had a sense of humor, too. And, she really knew how to throw a party. And oh yes, as son Ned said in his eloquent address to the congregation today, she could really cook! In his list of the foods she excelled at, unfortunately he omitted her cannelloni…what an error that was, Ned! One last thing: we loved that she chose Leonard Cohen’s most famous song to be sung today in her honor. We will miss you, Dear Anne.

  3. Our hearts are with Ed and all Anne’s dear family and friends. Anne was particularly kind to me when I was an “impossible” teen, and we had many wonderful conversations in the last few years that I will cherish forever. She thought deeply and with admirable compassion about the tough stuff in life, was so proud of her children and grandkids, and humble about her own accomplishments. Early in their relationship, I remember my mother and Ed shopping together for a present for her – they chose a beautiful crystal necklace that matched the color of her eyes – I will always think of her with eyes lit up – a window into her grace, humor, kindness, and gravitas!

  4. My deepest sympathies to the family. It was a pleasure to know Anne while living in Osoyoos. Anne was a positive personality and a pleasure to be with. Thank you for being such a bright light for all those years. You made the world a much better place.

  5. Anne, of course I miss you dreadfully, but I know how you suffered the last few months.
All I can think of are Paul’s words from 1st Corinthians: “sown in dishonour, raised in glory; sown in weakness, and raised in power”.
I’m thinking of you whole and full of life, and one day we will see each other again and laugh.

  6. Prayers to the Family in time of sorrow. God Bless you all. Rip Ann
