It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Annie died peacefully in Victoria, B.C. on May 29, 2025 at the age of 93. Annie was born to the late Joseph and Emily Westhead of Blackpool, England. Annie had 3 siblings; brother Billy and sisters Muriel and Mary. Annie was pre-deceased by her husband of 62 years, George Roberts. Cherished memories will remain in the hearts of her two daughters Susan (Les) Falloon in Victoria, B.C. and Carrol Tremblay in Dunrobin, ON; her grandchildren Carrie, Robert, Philip, Brent, Alison and Elizabeth and 3 great-children.
Annie quit school at the age of 14 to help work the home-based family market garden of vegetables and flowers. She met her future husband in 1953 at a dance, dated for 18 months and got married in August 1954 in Blackpool, England. They travelled to Canada on their honeymoon with $300. and the clothes in their suitcase. They didn’t return to visit England until 25 years later. They settled in Toronto where George got employment as an elevator repairman and Annie worked as a clerk at a department store for a year before they started a family. Both Susan and Carrol were born in Toronto. For the remainder of her life Annie became a stay-at-home mother and housewife.
In 1963, George and Annie moved to Kingston where they lived for 18 years. This permitted Sue and Carrol to spend most of their school years in Kingston. George and Annie bought their first house in 1966, but had two mortgages on it. In 1981, George’s work relocated them to Ottawa. The daughters had left home by then. In 1986 George retired, and they moved to Victoria to a 3-bedroom rancher.
Annie’s accomplishments included winning several medals in ballroom dancing and mastering machine knitting. When they moved to Victoria, George and Annie volunteered to coordinate the Ballroom Dancing Group at the Juan de Fuca Seniors Centre. Annie’s hobbies included sewing, hand knitting, gardening and taking long walks. Although Annie never learned to write, she was an avid reader.
Annie will be fondly remembered for her kindness, understanding, and personal sacrifice for her family which she dearly loved. Indeed, she was very proud of their accomplishments. Annie was a stoic person who never complained and never wanted to inconvenience anyone. She also remained current with changing social trends.
Annie’s ashes will be spread at sea where she will join her pre-deceased husband.
