November 19, 1905 – October 14, 2010

Archie died peacefully at the age of 104 at Victoria Hospice surrounded by his family. He is pre-deceased by his wife, Agnes, on October 15, 1991 and is survived by his sister, Kathleen, who lives in Westbank BC, daughter, Robin, who lives in Salmon Arm BC with her husband, Colin and his son, Herb, who lives in Victoria BC with his wife, Glenda. He has 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren with whom he thoroughly enjoyed spending as much time as possible. Family was very important to Archie.

Born on a mixed farm in Minto District in Manitoba on November 19, 1905, the third of eight children and was educated at Crocus Hill School in his district. Seeing no future on the family farm, he left home in 1932 and worked in various ore mines in Northern Manitoba and Ontario. In 1941, Archie enlisted in the armed forces and went oversees to England with the Royal Canadian Engineers. He later transferred to the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry with whom he served until February 13, 1945 when he was wounded in a Land Mine Explosion. He fully recovered and returned to Canada at the end of the war. He retired from the armed forces and moved to BC where he worked for various logging companies until 1950, when he started working for the Canadian Post Office from which he retired at the age of 65.

We wish to gratefully acknowledge Bayshore Home Care who cared for Archie in his home and the staff, Doctors, nurses, and volunteers at Victoria Hospice who made Archie’s final days peaceful which allowed him to die with dignity.

Funeral Service will be held in McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson & Vancouver Streets, on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow at Kiwanis Manor, 2075 Milton Street, for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Victoria Hospice. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.mccallbros.com.

I’m saddened to hear of the passing of the last patriarch of the Wilmot Clan. Great Uncle Archie was younger brother to my Grandmother, Elsie Kingdon (nee Wilmot). Over the years I’ve heard many stories of his wonderful sense of humour and his spirit for life – it’s a family trait that I’m happy to know has been passed on for many generations.
    Thinking of you,

    Kristi Kingdon

Having known Archie for over 30 years I know he was fortunate enough to live a very long and fruitful life which included his very much loved grandchildren. I trust that he will remain in your hearts forever! Respectfully your,

    Dear Robin,
I just happened to see the lovely write up in the paper about your Dad’s passing and really wanted to send you my condolences. I am so sorry for your loss. I remember way back when we were best friends in Elementary School and thinking you had the neatest Dad in the world. Not only had he built you a huge walk in cage under your back porch for all your canaries but he used to let you help him with his job. In the days of Saturday delivery, he would allow you to walk his route with him and actually deliver the mail. How cool was that! My Dad just had a dumb office job.
We lost touch with each other after going off to different high schools but I have many fond memories of our early friendship and have often hoped we would cross paths again one day.
I miss my parents terribly and trust you, like myself, will be sustained by the love and happy times we shared with our parents and that they had for us. Take care.
My best wishes for your family. I would love to hear from you.

    Dear Robin, Colin and boys,

We are so sorry for your loss and wanted you to know that we are thinking of you all. Archie was an incredible man and I am sure that there will be a big “gap” in many people’s lives. We will remember him fondly – especially his sense of humor. We are sorry that we cannot attend the service as we will be out of town on Friday. We would have liked to have paid our respects to Archie and give you all a hug. If you are in Victoria again please look us up – it would be great to keep in touch.

    Christine and Dave Kohlen
