January 17, 1941 – September 9, 2013

Barbara, wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, passed away at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Victoria, BC, September 9, 2013, at the age of 72 years, after battling cancer since January of this year.

Barbara was born to Claude Rae Watson and Elizabeth Mills Dunnell on January 17th, 1941 in Victoria, BC. Barbara attended St. Margaret’s school in Duncan for her early schooling and then attended and graduated from Victoria High. She was married in November of 1960 to William Albert Steffler (who survives her) and had four children. Barbara is survived by her children William Eugene Steffler; Sherry Elizabeth Dechant, children – Alison Teresa, Colton Cody and Tyrel Mitchell; Robert James Steffler, son Chance Robert William Steffler; Debra Ann Steffler, son Chase Alexander Steffler, girlfriend Taylor and great grandchildren, CJ and Alex. Also left to mourn is Garry Wick, Barbara’s second husband.

Barbara was a stay at home Mom devoting her life to her children and their activities for most of their growing years. She was instrumental (along with a core group of 8) in starting the Saanich Peninsula Lacrosse Association. She also volunteered her time as a 4-H parent volunteer and eventual leader. As her children got older, Barbara took a job in the Medical Records Department at Saanich Peninsula Hospital where she worked for 25 years, retiring in 2001.

Barbara divorced in 1985 and soon after began her life with Garry Wick. They spent 13 years living aboard a boat at various marinas. Then to Landsend Road in Sidney and finally settling on Hermwood Lane in Saanichton. In recent years Barbara took great joy in her time spent at the Native Centre in Central Saanich enjoying the company of friends while keeping her hands busy with various handicrafts including beading, knitting, crocheting etc.

Celebration of life took place on September 16th in Victoria, BC.

The family would like to express their thanks to the caring staff at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital – volunteers, nurses, doctors and also friends who gave support and kindness during Barbara’s illness. Also, thanks to all the family and friends that attended the Celebration of Life and/ or the lunch that followed and for those who shared stories and provided support to each other and to us, the family. We appreciated all the support and heartfelt condolences.
