Hammerton, Barry Victor passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, on September 8, 2010 in Victoria, B.C. He was 68 years old.

Barry leaves his beloved wife, Suzanne Hudon, son Kevin Czismar (Lisa) and grandchildren Jenna and Emma in Fairfield, Connecticut; son Paul, and daughter Michele in Toronto.

Born and educated in Manchester, England, Barry followed a career in Chartered Accountancy that took him to Belgium and then to South Africa where he lived for several years. He emigrated to Canada in 1985 to work in Toronto with Proctor and Gamble, until his early retirement in 1998.

An avid soccer and cricket fan, he also enjoyed golf, tennis and lawn bowling, and hiked in many countries around the world. He had a particular talent for making and keeping friends at home and abroad and did a wonderful job of staying in touch.

Barry and Suzanne moved to Victoria in 2005 where they immediately felt drawn to the outdoor lifestyle. Barry will be deeply missed by all his friends and family, including his extended Hudon family.

Suzanne, I was speaking with Judy Strother of our complex who nursed the residents of your end unit, and she told be about Barry’s recent passing, and I am so sorry — I saw nothing until I searched just now, I guess we were busy and didn’t read the newspaper very thoroughly… and I had just emailed you both.

I want to extend you our sympathy and to ask you to call me any time or come over to Unit 1 for a drop-in, unannounced.

I have often thought of you both and wished we had been able to connect more often, but it took us a while to settle in to Victoria — and then since Roger travels a lot on business something was always on our schedule.

    Suzanne and Family
I have been away from my computer for a week and have just now heard of the sad news about Barry. I did not know that Barry was ill with cancer nor that he had moved to B.C. so it was a shock to hear this very, very sad news re the final outcome of his illness.

I worked for Barry as his Admin Assistant at Procter & Gamble in my very early years at P&G –actually it was Barry that hired me in December, 1987.

Barry had a certain finesse, dignity, gentleness and kindness and he always conducted himself as a gentlemen. He always impressed me with these wonderful traits. One does not see these, “old school” marvellsous characteristcs, too often, these days!

    Rest in Peace, Mr. Hammerton!
You are in a better world!

My sincere condolences to Suzanne, his family and his extended family!

  • Nina Francisco & David Brown

    Dear Suzanne,

We were really saddened to hear of Barry’s passing. While we knew him only for a short while, we both found him a delightful and warm person, easy to be with and talk to. We still talk about the time we spent at the 2009 Nanaimo dinner where we got to talk to him at length. We enjoyed his company especially David as he was grateful to have found someone to watch the races with.

With our deepest sympathy – David and Nina

    To Suzanne,

Barry had the unique ability to have instant and positive rapport with everybody he met. We feel privileged to have known him, even for a short time. His love of life was contagious, and the strength he maintained throughout his challenges were an inspiration to us all. We share your sorrow at this difficult time, and want you to know you are in our thoughts and prayers.
Our bridge games will never be the same without Barry. He had the knack of knowing where all the cards were. We will miss him, but never forget him

    Dear Suzanne,

I was very sorry to hear of your loss and wish to extend my condolences to you and both your families. I did not know Barry well but will always remember how helpful you both were in helping me find my way round the hiking trails of Mount Doug prior to leading a Newcomers’ hike.

    Suzanne and family

Barry’s open friendly personality stood him well in the men’s newcomer’s club. His company was enjoyed on the golf course and wit and sense of humor flowed with ease in discussions. We’ve shared the golf course and hiking trails with Barry as well as enjoying his company over meals. He has left us with positive memories and will be missed. Our condolences to you during these difficult times.

  • Steve Rosen

    To Suzanne and Barry’s family,

I worked with Barry very early in my career at P&G. I learned a great deal from him – not just financial ‘work’, but much more importantly, how to be a gentleman and a caring individual at all times, and to always remember that business results are the outcome, but leading, developing, and caring for the individuals who work for you is how you get those results, and have a positive impact on others.

He was a great role model for all of us who worked with him. We kept in touch only sporadically after he moved out West, but I always thought he was also role modeling a great and active retirement. I am so sorry to learn that it was cut far shorter than he deserved.

If you know any Yiddish at all, you will know I am paying him a high compliment when I was he was a great “mensch”.

    ToThe Hammerton Family.
Carroll and I will be holding you all in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
I had the pleasure of meeting Barry in the early seventies when we worked together at Case in Johannesburg.
Barry loved his sport and we used to enjoy a weekly game of squash at Wanderers Club before going to work. We tried to introduce him to water sking but as he spent most of his time submerged that did not last too long.
Hiking was one of Barry’s passions and he got me interested as well. We did the Otter Trail twice, The Wild Coast Meander and the Coast to Coast English Hike.
We will miss you Barry and only wish we could be with you all at this time to give our love and hugs personally.
Suzanne thank you for caring so deeply for Barry over the last seven years and we will always remember the little Chapel in the Drakensberg. God bless you all.

We are so sad that Barry has left us all too early. The day we met Barry upon he and Aunt Sue moving to Victoria he was instantly our Uncle Barry.

    We miss you Uncle Barry.

    Dear Suzanne and family,

Although I met Barry so briefly in the past days his gentle spirit and gracious manner showed his sense of peace about his journey with his illness. It was such a privilege to know him ever so briefly, but deeply.

My hope is for those who mourn him to acquire this sense of quiet and peace within.

    My condolences,

  • Michele Hammerton

His life summarized in so few words, yet those who knew him understand that he was so much more. An outstanding father who took me to play ball in the park as a kid, who helped support my horse addition through my teens, and who used to bale hay with me and muck stalls as my horse addiction remained into adulthood. He was also our financial advisor throughout life, a constant resource my mom, my brother Paul and myself will feel lost without.

He leaves behind many friends in South Africa, England, Ontario and BC. My mom Sandy, with whom he shared 28 years of marriage and with whom he and Sue remained good friends with. My partner Karen, his ex sister-in-law Allana, her son Marc, and all of our friends who knew how lucky we all were to have such a great dad.

We are so thankful to Sue and the Hudon family for being a part of his life, he loved BC and he certainly loved the big bustle of your family. It was a privilege to be connected to such a great group of people through my dad.

  • Shirley Bristow

My thoughts & heart are with you, Suzanne.
    And with all the family
    Shirley Bristow.
