Barry Victor Hammerton

Hammerton, Barry Victor passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer, on September 8, 2010 in Victoria, B.C. He was 68 years old.

Barry leaves his beloved wife, Suzanne Hudon, son Kevin Czismar (Lisa) and grandchildren Jenna and Emma in Fairfield, Connecticut; son Paul, and daughter Michele in Toronto.

Born and educated in Manchester, England, Barry followed a career in Chartered Accountancy that took him to Belgium and then to South Africa where he lived for several years. He emigrated to Canada in 1985 to work in Toronto with Proctor and Gamble, until his early retirement in 1998.

An avid soccer and cricket fan, he also enjoyed golf, tennis and lawn bowling, and hiked in many countries around the world. He had a particular talent for making and keeping friends at home and abroad and did a wonderful job of staying in touch.

Barry and Suzanne moved to Victoria in 2005 where they immediately felt drawn to the outdoor lifestyle. Barry will be deeply missed by all his friends and family, including his extended Hudon family.

  1. Suzanne – I only got to know Barry over the last six or seven years through newcomers and our shared love of golf and soccer. I enjoyed his company and was very sad to hear of his illness and death.
Prior travel arrangements will not allow me to attend the service but I would like to offer my sincere condolences to you and the family.

  6. Dear Suzanne and family,

Although I met Barry so briefly in the past days his gentle spirit and gracious manner showed his sense of peace about his journey with his illness. It was such a privilege to know him ever so briefly, but deeply.

My hope is for those who mourn him to acquire this sense of quiet and peace within.

    My condolences,

    Helen Wong MSW

  7. Dear Suzanne,
We were so sorry to hear of Barry’s death. He was far too young and you both deserved a much longer life together. Richard and I send you and the family our deepest condolences at this very sad time.
    Sincerely,
    Dianne and Richard Black (newcomers)

  8. Dear Suzanne and family,

  9. His life summarized in so few words, yet those who knew him understand that he was so much more. An outstanding father who took me to play ball in the park as a kid, who helped support my horse addition through my teens, and who used to bale hay with me and muck stalls as my horse addiction remained into adulthood. He was also our financial advisor throughout life, a constant resource my mom, my brother Paul and myself will feel lost without.

He leaves behind many friends in South Africa, England, Ontario and BC. My mom Sandy, with whom he shared 28 years of marriage and with whom he and Sue remained good friends with. My partner Karen, his ex sister-in-law Allana, her son Marc, and all of our friends who knew how lucky we all were to have such a great dad.

We are so thankful to Sue and the Hudon family for being a part of his life, he loved BC and he certainly loved the big bustle of your family. It was a privilege to be connected to such a great group of people through my dad.

  10. My thoughts & heart are with you, Suzanne.
    And with all the family
    Shirley Bristow.
