Barrett, Betty Joan Alberta: died peacefully in Saanichton, April 30th 2017.

Born in London, England, on August 24, 1928, fiercely independent from a young age, and determined to head up her own business, she started what would eventually turn out to be a long career in international finance, in chicken farming of all things.  Post war conditions making that endeavor difficult to develop fully, Betty, in her words, drifted into banking, via the head office of National Provincial Bank, before immigrating to the U.S. with life-long friend and companion, Doreen Roddis.

Based in Alexandria, Betty worked in the overseas branch of the World Bank in Washington until retiring to Canada in 1986.  Remembered for her gentle wit, generosity, passion for the English language and devotion to the decades-long stream of waif and stray cats who found a loving home in Central Saanich and in later years, Sidney. Betty will be greatly missed by her many cherished friends.

Again, in Betty’s words, special thanks to Ron Gurney for his going well beyond that extra mile, especially over the past year.

A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church 1319 Mills Rd, North Saanich, BC. on Friday, May 12 at 2pm, followed by a reception in the church hall.

In memory of Betty, donations may be made to The Victoria Cat Rescue Corps Society, P.O. Box 5478 LCD 9, Victoria, B.C. V8R 6S4.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

We are so sad at this time and will dearly miss Betty’s kind smile and friendship. We met her three years ago when we brought her a cat in our Senior Foster Program. She named him Biggles (a name she saved many years for a male cat!) and he was a great companion to her. We saw her and Biggles quite often and she gave him the wonderful love and devotion we know she gave all her cats over the years. Anyone who knew Betty will agree she was a truly lovely person with a delightful sense of humour and it was an honour to have her in our lives.
