Caroline Wolmuth was the eldest of three sisters, she is survived by Louise Rising and Irene Thomas. Raised in Palo Alto, California by parents Betty and Richard Buckwalter (deceased).

With a creative flair, she was a social instigator of many elaborate gatherings. After studying fashion design at Pratt University in NYC, she married Warren Wolmuth in 1964. The newlyweds resided in San Francisco’s Marina district before emigrating to Canada where they had one son, Derk Wolmuth, born in Vancouver.

In 1973 they moved to Victoria, BC, where they settled. She graduated from the University of Victoria in Visual Arts. Clothing design, Ikebana, and cooking were her expressive modes where she experimented with ever evolving colour, form, and taste.

She played the recorder for decades in musical ensembles. She also started a business with her best friend Christine Packford called ‘Paper Works’, where they made party decorations and costume jewellery.

She traveled the world and was especially fond of Venice, Italy and Carnival, where she designed inventive costumes for her friends and herself. She was generous and open-hearted, taking many under her wing. Living with passion and a flourish, she will be missed by so many.

A celebration of life is to be announced.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

Derk, Richard and I were very sorry to read that your mother had passed away. Caroline was a friendly, funny and empathetic person and we always enjoyed talking with her. In addition, she was multi-talented and designed and produced the Christmas decor for our former business. We received so many compliments on them!

You have our deepest sympathy on her passing and please know we still think of Caroline often and all of us are the better for having had her in our lives.

She touched the lives of my whole family and we remember her in gratitude. We offer our blessings to you, Derk, knowing she will live on in our fond memories.

Caroline was a kind, generous, talented woman, who will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We met through our support of Dance Victoria events and bonded when I helped her buy fabric on a DV trip to Buenos Aires. Her haute couture talents were displayed at Government House’s costume museum, with outfits made of paper. She faced her health challenges with courage and humour. Sympathy to Derk and her sisters.
