  • Barry McLoghlin

The very sad news of Charlie’s death (My Favorite Uncle and friend) has just reached me here in Australia this day.
I am lost for words as I try to communicate to his family and friends my loss this day.
His positive, loving and very funny personality however allows me to write further:
Although I have not met Charlie and Shirley and the girls in person since the late ’70’s when I visited their beautiful home in Malahide, Co. Dublin on vacation from my new home in Toronto Canada, their presence and love were always a big part in my life as I travelled the world since.
The great memories of course for me are the pre-1970’s as I grew-up in Ireland both North and South.
Before Charlie and Shirley were married they took turns to baby-sit me in Donaghadee Co Down.
I was 3+ years old and remember visiting his “Shop” on main street Donaghadee on many occasions while my mother Eileen (Rose) and Shirley (Shiela) ran the Hair Solon further up the street. (1951-1952)
However the best had yet to come:
The McLoghlin family moved to Dublin but almost every Christmas thereafter in the 50’s they came to Dublin to spend Xmas with us. (Great memories as my sister Shirley can attest).
The Xmas presents were always great.
In the 60’s I visited the Belfast Road address in Bangor before the “Boys “were born.
It was just Carmel, Geraldine and Veronica at that time.
It was during this time that Charlie and Shirley “spoiled” me rotten. (Thanks) I guess I was 14 years old.
We played “Snooker”, “Pitch and Put” and I was allowed to “smoke” (Charlie’s Cigs) in the evening.
Most Saturday afternoons he took me to a Soccer game. (Expensive seats I recall)
We were indeed friends and he was my hero.
That wonderful summer ended and I was a new person, equipped with a new “Transistor Radio” as I went back to school in Dublin
We drifted as I matured and his family grew with the boys (His sons) coming on the scene.
As soon as the Walsh’s moved to Canada or soon thereafter I had moved my family to USA.

As I end my thoughts regarding this sad news I have to say that ironically I have a letter/note addressed to Charlie and Shirley sitting on my work-desk at my home in Atlanta (USA) with words of thanks and memories similar to above. (Never Posted as I rushed to catch a plane for Australia)

    Love, Sorrow and Sincerity,

Charlie Walsh “Rest in Peace” and your great family come to terms with his passing.

    Barry
