January 1, 1924 – March 9, 2009
Charlie passed into the presence of the Lord on Monday, March 9, 2009 at 3 pm in his favorite chair, from complications of a short struggle with cancer. He was with his family and was 85.
Charlie was born in small town in the Ukraine on January 1, 1924, to Tony and Tina Stebelski. The family immigrated to Fort William – Port Arthur, Ontario in 1931 to seek a better life. When the family moved to Victoria in 1941, Tony opened his shoemaking business and the family name was changed to Robinson. It was much easier to be accepted into the business community having an anglicized family name. Charlie had an elder sister, Stella and four younger brothers, Ted (Red), Eddie, Walter, and Joe. Charlie was the eldest son. Surviving siblings are Walter and Joe.
Charlie was proud of his wartime service, 1943-1947. Following the war he sought further education at The Vancouver School of Barbering. He always wanted to work for himself. He lived by his own advice when he opened his own Barber Shop at Hillside and Quadra. He operated the business at the same location for 42 years. Charlie had a huge, successful and loyal clientele. He specialized though, in 2 styles of hair cuts; short and shorter. After work Charlie and Ted would cruise on their Harley’s and impress the local ladies. They frequented the Empress Hotel where he met Elodie Schellinck. She was smitten with Charlie or maybe it was that 1949 Harley Davidson, they were married on March 26, 1951 in Victoria.
Charlie was a happy go lucky kind of guy, had many interests, enjoyed many activities, including a good game of Solitaire. He was a very talented oyster shucker, you had to have the “knack.” He loved to travel and did most of it after he and Elodie retired in 1990. His favorite destinations were Bali and St. Petersburg Square in Moscow.
He enjoyed music of all kinds from Pavarotti to Harry Belafonte. Charlie always wanted to be trained as a singer. He enjoyed a good John Wayne western and any National Geographic show, Charlie appreciated God’s creation.
His project in his later retirement years was restoring the 1964 emerald green Cadillac 4 door sedan deVille. It was pure pride and joy for him to accomplish this with Shawn. Charlie’s dad, Tony passed it onto him. He was so proud of it.
Charlie loved to be around people. He usually had a big embellished story to tell; maybe too good a story. He would give you an opinion anytime you needed it about politics, social issues and current events. His sense of humor and straightforward attitude made you want to be around him.
Charlie is survived by wife Elodie of 57 years, sons Bruce (Maureen), Mark (Laura), Shawn (Carmen), and daughter Dana (Jim).Charlie had 6 grandchildren Megan (1981-1988), Erin, Sarah, Leigh, Kirk and Claire.
A mass will be held at St Patrick’s Church, 2060 Haultain Street at noon Friday March 13, 2009. Father Hill to officiate. The Mass will be followed with a graveside burial at Royal Oak Cemetery. No grave flowers, donations can be made to The Salvation Army Victoria ARC or The St. Vincent De Paul Society.
Our sincere thanks are extended to Drs. Frank Egan, Jeff Mccracken and John Kinahan, hospice nurses Matthew, Carol, Susan, and Beacon Services. Their genuine commitment to Charlie’s care was exemplary.

Dear Cousins Dana, Bruce, Mark, Shaun and families

I am soooo sorry this message of condolence is soooo late! You have been in my thoughts for months now, and especially since the deaths of your fabulous parents. As you know, mom hasn’t been that well either, and it upset her greatly that she had to cancel her trip to Victoria in March. It’s so gratifying to realize that our parents and their siblings were so close. My mom and your mom had a wonderful bond. Mom misses her so much and feels so sad. However, she is sooooo glad that she was able to talk to her on the phone just before she died. Thankyou Shaun for facilitating that!!

My most vivid memory of your parents was when Jan and I went to Victoria when we were about 12 and 14 yrs old. We stayed a couple of nights at Auntie Elodie’s and Uncle Charlie’s. I just couldn’t believe it, but they insisted we sleep in their bedroom. What??! The Master Suite??! As if !!!! We felt so privileged and so special. Then, the next day, they took us to the ocean which we had never seen. Your dad opened oysters and ate them. They were raw and he asked if we would like one. I wanted to pewk. Couldn’t believe it. Will never forget it. ha! They were great people. Always so kind, and just so very nice.

You will miss them. I’m sure their legacy will live on, in you all.

God bless and stay close to one another.

    Love Pat.

Dear Dana, Shawn, Mark and Bruce and your families. Uncle Charlie made the BEST cabbage rolls! He was always generous with his time for others, never failing to deliver a good story or strong opinion. He was true to himself and unafraid to make fun of himself every New Year’s Eve as he ‘stressed’ over turning another year older! For my gentle, brave, humorous, and fun loving “Born Free!” Uncle, today I planted a tall Bloodgood maple, a symbol of devotion that Uncle Charlie embodied for his life’s love, Auntie Elodie, and for his children and grandchildren. With love to you and your families, Suzanne Marie.

To Elodie and family – I was sorry to learn of Charles death – I met him about 20 years ago through my relationship with the Moreau family. Charles and I bonded over the fact that we were car enthusiests. I remember well the excellent Cadilac that he had parked in front of his house. He was an interesting person and as I recall always had a good story to tell. My condolences to you and the Moreau family .

I was sorry to hear about “Charlie the Barber’s” (as my Dad would say) passing. I have many memories of Charlie in my early years on Cowichan Street. Charlie truly was a character and I know my parents loved the time they were able to spend with him and Elodie. My thoughts and prayers are with the whole family.

    Dear Elodie and Family:
We were saddened to hear of Uncle Charlie’s death.
I have many fond memories of Uncle Charlie when he still lived in Fort William. My best time with him was when he took me for rides in his 1941 Ford when I was just a little boy.
My wife and I made three trips to Victoria and enjoyed our time there with him and the Robinson family and especially our trips to the Museum.
We had fun when he visited Thunder Bay and we took him blueberry picking and fishing at our camp on Graham Lake.
    Love
    Clarence and Pat Merko
(presently wintering in Port Aransas, Texas)

    Dear Dana and Family:

I was so sorry to read in this mornings paper that your dear Dad passed away. I remember the first time I met Charlie and how he made me smile, despite the circumstances we were both in.
May the love and support of family and friends get you through this rough time. In May of 2003 my husband was killed in a motorcycle accident and I understand and know the pain you are all going through.
Stay strong and may the memories of your Dad bring a smile to lips and a warm glow in your hearts.
Our deepest sympathy to all of you.

    Pam Verley (McLean)
