Born in south Oak Bay to Norman and Elizabeth Wardell, David developed an early love of the ocean and outdoors. He loved fly-fishing, sailing and sports cars.

A longtime member of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club, David would find any excuse to be sailing, racing or tinkering on boats—a passion that was passed onto his children and grandchildren.

Retiring from the BC Government’s Ministry of Finance after 35 years, David’s parting remarks were “54 and out the door!” Retirement years were happily spent enjoying (more) sailing, traveling and fishing with his best friend and wife of 69 years, Marie. There were extended stays in Spain and the UK and many trips to Europe, Australia, South America and the Caribbean.

Most importantly, David was a gentleman who was always kind, caring and had a sharp wit. He was a proud and loving husband, father and grandfather. Survived by his wife Marie, his children, Charlotte Wardell (Mark van den Driessche) and Alexandra Wardell (Bill Clary); and grandchildren, Nicholas O’Brien (Irina O’Brien), Julian van den Driessche and Max van den Driessche.

Fair winds and following seas to a loving husband, father and grandfather.

A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society or Doctors Without Borders would be appreciated.
