Dave passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on December 29, 2021. He was born in Victoria, BC on December 9, 1954. Predeceased by his parents Virginia and George Winter and sister Nicki Winter. Left to cherish Dave’s memory are his wife Diane; son Tyler; brother Arthur (Louise); sister Shelley (Rod); brother-in-law Patrick; sister-in-law Carole; brother-in-law Terry (Terri); aunt Frances Camiade, as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Dave had a vibrant essence and presence. If you knew Dave you would immediately think of his inherent fun-loving and generous nature; and when in his company, he was always interested in “you”.
Dave grew up in Cadboro Bay, attended Frank Hobbs Elementary and Mount Douglas High School. He liked the social side of school and through those years made many lifelong friends.
Growing up, Dave treasured his family, with Mom, Dad and three siblings they had a great life together: boating, skiing, the grandparent’s cottage on Langford Lake, Sunday dinners and parties for all special occasions. The Winter family had two pleasure craft, the “Jericho” and the “Lodestar”; Dave adored the boating days, often retelling of the many adventures. In later years Dave loved the family “cabin” at Mesachie Lake.
Dave’s career was in construction, starting out in his teens in the family business, A. H. Winter and Son Construction. Overall, Dave worked nearly fifty years with the company. Dave and Art took over as owner operators in the early 1990’s. Dave loved his work; no one was more dedicated, hardworking, honest and generous than Dave. This was his way, personally and professionally.
Dave truly enjoyed his life and was consistently the most social person. He was always so happy when getting together with “everyone” anywhere and everywhere, presenting fun games, fishing competitions, horse races, tiki bars, loads of barbeques, dinners, and many lake tours on the “Mesachie Queen”.
Dave loved his home with Diane. Here is where Dave was a real homebody, very happy and content working on his many hobbies, projects, his beautiful garden, (and no surprise) hosting parties and dinners. And always planning the next adventures with Diane.
Dave was happy Tyler lived close by so they could go exploring around the area, fish the many lakes and especially enjoy Mesachie Lake.
Dave generated a lot of love in his life and he freely shared it with all of us; he will be sorely missed.
A Celebration of Dave’s life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC, on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 2:00pm. To assist with planning, please RSVP with the number in your party to: davesmemorial23@gmail.com.

Diane, our deepest condolences. The world has lost an incredible person. We are very fortunate to have many great memories with you both, and grateful for the visit in Sept. Dave will be so missed by so many people. Our love and thoughts are with you Diane.
Diane, Tyler, and the rest of the family, we are so saddened by Dave’s passing. I will always remember him as the fun Uncle, who likes to join in the cousin’s childhood shenanigans at family dinners. One time that really stands out to me is when we were in Palm Springs and he drove Tyler and I out into the desert looking for lizards. I don’t even remember if we found any lizards, but I do remember having the best adventure that day. I will also always appreciate the effort Uncle Dave put into making sure the cabin lawn looked perfect for our wedding. He certainly made the most of his time and lived fully. Love to Diane and Tyler.

An old Cadboro Bay friend. The write up in the TC obituaries today was well done and right on. Whenever I saw Dave it was at a social event and I would always come away thinking if you wanted a party you could have one with just Dave. Always positive, always a pleasure to be with. Condolences to the family. Chris and Heather
Our heartfelt condolences to Diane, Tyler, Shelly and Arthur on David’s passing. Having been good friends for 58 plus years I know David to be a truly loyal friend and very generous in nature. David, like his parents, always had time to help out if needed. David took over from his Dad as Captain of the M/V lodestar and always took friends along making sure they were entertained and fed – what a guy. David accomplished many remarkable and profitable projects in his working career but was very humble about it.
As many of his good friends can attest to, Diane and David had hosted many legendary get togethers at Mesachie Lake, always having a new group game that amazed us all. We have lost a good kind and generous man much too early. Diane, stay strong your many friends are thinking of you. Give time for your heart to heal. I feel honored and privileged to be able to call David my friend. Thanks for all the great memories. Until next time.
Dear Shelley and family, please accept my condolences re
the passing of your brother David. I just lost my younger sister this January but we did have the opportunity to say goodbye. It is difficult when they leave too early and unexpectedly. I am sorry for your loss.
With great respect Dave was the most experienced, dedicated, hardest working friend a company had the pleasure to employ. All of us at Westhills and specifically Lakewood thoroughly enjoyed working with Dave. Dave’s enthusiasm and zest for life was an inspiration to all of us. Personally, I miss our regular chats on the site about life in general and the industry we work in. Dave’s passing was a shock to us all and way too soon. Our sincere condolences to Diane and his family.
All of us at Westhills & Lakewood.
Very sad to hear of David’s passing. I became acquainted with him while surveying construction sites in Langford. He was always friendly, helpful and genuinely glad to see me whenever we met up. I valued him as one of my construction friends. My sympathies to his family as I know he will be missed.
We regret not having visited Dave & Diane for awhile.
Dave was a big part of our lives growing up in Victoria. His energy and zest for life were infectious. He was able to connect with people easily and his bonds with friends were strong and everlasting. Dave was a social leader within our group, always organizing events and ensuring everyone had fun.
His love of friends, family and most of all Diane will be missed but never fogotten.
What a wonderful person who over time touched our lives in so many unique and beautiful unforgettable ways with Diane, at each other’s sides, sharing parts of their lives with us. This will never be forgotten. We are so grateful to have known Dave. He has given us ultimately some of the best gifts anyone can receive, an example of how to enjoy life, kindness, and friendship along with Diane. Diane we hope to continue sharing these gifts between us, for all of us because you’re in our hearts.
We love you Dave and Diane! You will always be a big and important part of our lives! We Cherish All of the Amazing Get-togethers with you both. Thank you so much for your amazing friendship over many decades Dave! Our Dearest Diane, we hope we can share many more wonderful memories together until we all join Dave on the other side. All our Love!
