March 15, 1927 – Sept 13, 2012

It is with saddened hearts, the family of David William Metcalfe announces his passing at the age of 85. David was surrounded by the love of his family and is now reunited with the love of his life, Eleanor who passed away July 23.

He will be lovingly remembered by his brother George (Kathleen), daughters, Margaret Munday (Al), Sandra Crowe (Bruce), Heather Lamont (Roy), grandchildren, Amena (Alan), Megan (Mark), Andrew, Morgan, Tawni, Andre, Alexandra, Savannah, great-grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew, Katelyn, Christopher, many relatives and friends.

Dave loved life, his community and especially his family. He was actively involved with his church serving in many positions and always a “handyman.” Dave played a big role in the formation of the United Ostomy Assoc, Victoria Chapter and served on national boards. He was a member of Toastmasters for many years and engaged in public speaking at every opportunity. Living in Esquimalt since 1965 he enjoyed his participation on the Library Board and on the Emergency Preparedness Committee. He was always there to help others. Dave worked at Yarrows Shipyard as a foreman and Fire Chief for 40 years.

David was born in Edmonton, predeceased by his parents, George Sr. and Mary, his beloved wife of 59 years, Eleanor and his faithful companion, Duke. Dave and Eleanor lovingly raised their family in their Esquimalt home, remaining there for 44 years before moving to the Renaissance Retirement Residence.

Dave and Eleanor travelled throughout North America on family trips, to many UOA conferences, and loved their vacations to the UK to meet extended family and explore family history.

David loved a good party and with mom continually opened their home for the famous “Metcalfe” pool parties. Hospitality was extended to many by invitation into their home, to share a meal and lots of laughter.

Dave always had a smile on his face and a joke on his lips. “What would you do if you couldn’t laugh” was his favorite line. Dad with Mom built a beautiful life with their hands, their hearts, their love and their faith. We are blessed to have such loving and supportive parents.

Special thanks to the kind and caring staff at Victoria General Hospital, 4South, the Renaissance and the Paramedics that attended to dad.

A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 2 pm, at the Parish of St. Peter and St. Paul (St. Paul Naval Garrison Church), 1379 Esquimalt Rd. followed by a reception in the church hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Ostomy Assoc, Victoria Chapter, PO Box 43023, Victoria North, Victoria, BC V8X 3G0; or the Parish of St. Peter and St. Paul. Condolences may be offered below.

We at the Island Medical Program would like to express our condolences to the family and friends of Dave Metcalf.
Dave was a volunteer patient with the IMP. He demonstrated to second year medical students his interesting and complex medical issues. Sharing his knowledge with humour, he put the students at ease while providing them an invaluable learning experience. He was also a gentle ‘arm twist’ when recruiting other volunteers to our program.
    We thank him.

Margaret, Sandra and Heather, we were very sorry to hear about the passing of both your mom and dad. They were very special people. We will never forget the great times we had with them. Especially for our wedding back 35 years ago.

Maureen and I are saddened to learn of the passing of Eleanor and Dave, but Heaven will be a cheerier place. Dave’s zest for life and fun was contagious to everyone he touched; he was a good friend. We still have the painting that Eleanor did for us for our wedding, but she even outshone her talents. They touched many lives and we are all better for it. We remember them fondly. Don and Maureen Binder

Bruce, Sandra, Andrew, Heather, and other family members, I am truly sorry for the loss of your dear parents. I lost my Mom on June 19th to ALS and I can understand your pain and grief. Take comfort in knowing that both of them are now at peace and in Heaven watching over all of you. I am sending my love and prayers to all of you!

  • Lorne Aronson, President Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada (www.fowc.ca)

Dave was a founding member of Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada.
We all remember Dave for his jovial ability to make people feel at home during Conferences of UOAC. We especially remember Dave’s Plaid Jacket at every conference.

Through the years Dave ensured that surplus ostomy equipment was sent to FOWC and the S.H.A.R.E. Program(Sending Help and Rehabilitation Everywhere) and that legacy continues today through the generosity of the Victoria Ostomy Chapter. Thank you Dave for all your help.

Chimo Dave! You will be missed!

  • Peter Folk

Dave was a valued member of the United Ostomy Association of Canada and the Friends of Ostomates Worldwide Canada. Well done Dave!
