Doreen, aged 88, our dear mom, grandmom, and great grandmom, went to be with her Saviour the morning of Saturday, August 2nd, 2025. She was born in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba in 1936, the daughter of Charlie and Grace Muir and the little sister of Donald. She later moved to Winnipeg for schooling to become a lab technician and take several trips to Europe with a close friend and fellow student. Doreen then married Henry and settled in Calgary where they started their family before moving out to Victoria BC. It is here they raised their three boys and became mainstays at Westview Gospel Chapel. In 2019 Doreen moved to Elim Seniors Housing in Surrey, BC to be closer to grandkids and to enjoy the social benefits of a seniors-oriented home. Mom, Grandma, and Oma were her titles, and she fulfilled those roles with consistency and care and was well-loved for it. She was smart, independent, consistent in her faith in Jesus, devoted to her family, and a faithful friend. We will miss her dearly and she will be remembered for her character, her enduring sense of humour, her ability to sustain a stimulating conversation, and her easy-going hospitality. While missing her we also celebrate a life well-lived, a life devoted to serving others through parenting and grandparenting, and through church, children’s camp, home care employment, and volunteerism. She was a strong example of ‘not sweating the small stuff’ and focusing instead on fostering positive relationships.

Doreen was preceded in her death by her husband in 2001, Henry Loewen. She is survived by her three sons: Gordon (Llana), William (Errin) and David (Sharlene), her four grandchildren: Rhianna, Chloe (David), Olivia, and Ilyah, and by her great grandchildren: Jordyn and Asher. Doreen is also fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews on both her and Henry’s side of the family.  Doreen will be interred at Royal Oak Burial Park beside her husband, Henry.

A Reception will take place in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC on Thursday, September 25th at 2:00 p.m.

A Memorial Service and Reception will be held in the Harrison West Chapel at Elim Village Senior’s Housing, 9025 160 Street, Surrey, BC on Saturday, September 27th at 1:00 p.m.

The above description of Doreen resonates with me in so many ways. She was hospitable, loyal, valued friends and family and faith. While strong in her own convictions she was humble and non-judgmental in her interactions with others. I valued her sense of humour which brought balance to our rather serious extended family. As one of the eldest in our cousin group, she had a knowledge of family history and a familiarity with our grandparents that I did not have. She never tired of answering questions about our parents and grandparents and sharing anecdotes that gave glimpses into the stories behind the old family photos. When we moved to BC and were able to see her more often, I felt like I gained a ‘big sister.’ I am grieving her loss but at the same time so glad for her to be healed and happy in heaven.

Doreen was a dear cousin who also lived not far from us in Victoria, BC . I enjoyed spending time with her and Aunt Grace and learning about our shared family history and our shared faith in our Lord and Saviour. She often babysat our children and kept us up to date on her boys after we left BC. We know we will be be reunited with her when the Lord calls us home. Our condolences to the boys and their families. Alois and Sheila(nee Muir) Boermann.

To the Loewen family: Doreen was a wonderful friend to me. We had many happy times together on church related events and trips Doreen joined in helping with my senior friends and became their friend as well. Her move to Surrey was a bit of a jolt to me but it turned out for good as Doreen was so hospitable and welcoming on the numerous times I stayed with her – she was so thoughtful and wanted me to get away for a break. I am glad that she is with our Saviour and look forward to the day when we will be around the Throne worshipping Him.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, her loved ones.

Remembering Doreen fondly for the years we were at Westview. Her laugh was infectious, her love for the children was second to none. My kids loved Doreen and we all have such fond memories of this most lovely person. Rest in peace dear Doreen.
