Our beloved mother, Doris Hryciuk, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2014. She was predeceased by her husband Nestor; parents Hildegard and Friedrich; sister Ingrid and son-in-law Murray. She is survived by her brother Friedel; children Patty, Michael (Jacquie), Eric, and Robin (Clifford); grandchildren Sidney, Alec, Lucas and Ava; nieces and nephews, as well as the two much-loved family pets, Charlie and Molly. Doris leaves behind many dear friends who were such wonderful support throughout her life.
Doris was born in Wuppertal, Germany on November 23, 1937. Her family’s home was destroyed in a bombing raid when she was a child and they relocated to Westhofen. Mom studied art and graphics at Werkkunstschule, Wuppertal and received a diploma in 1958. Mom was quick to discover a joy for travelling and eventually moved to Paris as an au pair. After many exciting adventures travelling, she settled back in Germany where she soon met and fell head over heels for Nestor, the handsome Air Force doctor from Winnipeg. They married soon after and mom gave birth to Patty and Michael in Germany before moving to Ottawa and having Eric and Robin. The family lived in Goosebay, Toronto and Halifax before finally settling in Victoria in 1970. Mom attended the Victoria College of Art and was a well-known and accomplished artist having several exhibitions at various art galleries. After Nestor’s passing, Mom enjoyed travelling and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and her many dear friends with whom she had such wonderfully long-lasting relationships. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family, her generous nature, her strength, grace, dignity, and elegance as well as her exquisite fashion sense. We are all so fortunate to have had her in our lives, she brought out the best in us. Our dear Doris has gone to finally rest with her beloved Nestor.
Thank you to doctors Morgan, Peterson, Saltman, and Smatanova, and the nurses and aides of 8S at the Royal Jubilee and Victoria Hospice.
There is no funeral by request. A celebration of Doris’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Victoria Hospice or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

Patty, Michael, Eric and Robin: Please accept my condolences on the loss of your mother. I have just seen the obituary and was sad to see that she had died. I sympathise with you all in your grief. Your mother and I had not been in contact for many years mainly because I left Victoria in 1984, but I think of her every time I look at one of her pictures that hangs in my bedroom. It is of a little shady and peaceful stream in Goldstream Park painted in her inimitable style.. I am glad I have that little bit of her now that she is gone. I will let Lachlan, Fiona and Alison know about her passing, I know that they will join with me in sympathy with your loss. Best regards, Tonita (Toni) Murray.
