January 1, 1918 to September 14, 2010
Predeceased by her parents, James and Annie Forbes and her brother, James Forbes Jr. (Hilda). She is survived by her husband, Benton Mackid of Calgary; her daughters, Daphne McKeen and Mimi (McKeen) Cooke; her step-children, Court (Linda) Mackid and Corliss Mackid; her brother, Monty (Connie) Forbes; her grandchildren, Toby Ward and Gus Ward, Orejona Ashton and Jonathan-David Ashton, Jennifer and Christian Mackid and Christina Carter; great- grandchildren, Rachel and Caroline Ward and Gabriel Martinez. Dory was born In Winnipeg and graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and the Toronto Conservatory of Music. She was the first woman passenger agent for Air Canada, then TCA. During the war she met and married RCAF Fl. Lt. Fred S. McKeen. They moved to Vancouver where their daughters were born and Dory found a niche in the West Coast lifestyle. They were divorced in 1959, after which, Dory travelled around the world solo, skiing in Switzerland, riding camels in Egypt and having other brave and scary adventures. Dory was an active member of The Junior Leagues of Vancouver and Calgary. An enthusiastic sportswoman, Dory was equally at home playing golf and tennis, skiing on Grouse Mountain or waterskiing in local waters. She was a member of the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club and The Victoria Golf Club. Dory loved to travel and together with her husband Benton, whom she married in 1962, enjoyed many adventures all over the globe as well as winters in Palm Desert. After several years in Calgary, she and Benton moved to Vancouver Island to enjoy his retirement among their golfing and boating friends. Dory outlived most of her friends; however her family will miss her especially for her generosity, her sense of humour and fair play. Dory accepted old age with grace, dignity and humour. She was a really good sport. The family would like to thank the caregivers and nursing staff at Sunrise in Victoria and a special thank you to Linda Lukow for all of her special attention to Mum.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 25 at 2:00 pm in MCCALL BROS. FLORAL CHAPEL, (Johnson & Vancouver Streets) 1400 Vancouver Street, Victoria, BC V8V 3W3. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Victoria Conservatory of Music, 900 Johnson Street, Victoria, B.C V8V 3N4 or to the charity of your choice. Jackie Mackin Byrn Daphne and Mimi;
Where to begin with accolades for your dazzling
Mum?I think I’ll start with her crisp, pleated white tennis dress generously recycled to me in the late 60’s.
It must have had magic embedded in the fabric!
Clad in Dory’s magical costume I took to the
tennis court as if I did in fact belong there!
And with practise, practise, practise I actually
learned to play doubles beating the likes of
The Mindells and others with aplomb and style.Thank-you Dory – your splendid role modelling and
verve helped shape the athleticism that now serves as a
cornerstone in my life as an awarded age-group
triathlete.Bon Voyage Dory! A bientot!

Jo Ann Martin Dear Daphne and Minder:
I am looking at a photo taken at Woodlands when we (Daph) were little ones and your Mother was a Number One Stunner, standing next to my Mama.
All my earlier life was spent, wishing and hoping, “when I grow up, I want to be just like Dory McKeen”!!
Thinking of you.
My best regards to Corliss and family
With warm regards and and remembering the sweet heart that was your Mother.

Mark McCowan My sincere condolences to Benton and family on your loss.
Benton is a gentleman’s gentleman and it was indeed a privilege and pleasure working in the same office until Benton retired.
I haven’t seen Benton for a couple of years now but hope he continues to do well.

Sally Lee Dear Court & Family,
My mother was Mary Maclaren, and her dad, Archibald, worked with your grandfather.I was so sorry to hear of Dory’s passing – I met her a number of times when she was visiting my mom in Kelowna. She was a lovely lady.
My mom passed away in Kelowna in May, just a week short of her 97th birthday. My niece helped us by cleaning our her condo, but unfortunately did not keep her address lists and I’ve been unable to contact her old friends. It sounds like your dad may still be alive, and if he’s able to converse, I’d love to talk with him. He and mom were such good friends throughout their lives. Please call me at your convenience and let me know how your dad is doing. Again, my condolences to you and your family.
