With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Dr. Allan Ivan Romanchuk who passed away January 4, 2025, at the age of 72.

Al was born on August 2nd, 1952, in Edmonton Alberta. He is survived by his wife, Donna (nee Wallace), children, Steven Romanchuk (Jennifer), Karen Keylock (Rand), siblings, Alice Laberge (Larry), Donna Romanchuk, grandchildren, James, Louis, Beatrice and Clark Romanchuk, Ava and Ben Keylock and a large extended family. He was predeceased by his parents Lou and Violet Romanchuk.

Al lived a full life of dedication and kindness. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Alberta in 1975 and while attending medical school he met his future wife, Donna. They were married in September 1979 settling in Penticton, BC, to practice medicine and to raise a family together. As a physician, he served as a pillar to his family and his community, placing the needs of his loved ones and patients above his own. He exemplified the values of integrity, humility, punctuality and compassion. A fact not lost on the hospital nurses who would call at 8:02 AM if he had not arrived even on Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Above all, Al was a devoted husband to Donna. Together they built a life full of love, respect, and shared dreams. It was a true partnership. For 35 years, Al and Donna worked side by side practicing medicine sharing an office and one small desk. They shared a passion for travel and for the past 25 years have travelled the world with their friends and family. His favorite destination was Africa and as recently as June 2024, Al and Donna were embracing the culture of southern France and hiking the Dolomites. Al was the ultimate travel planner, meticulously organizing adventures and earning the affectionate title of “travel agent extraordinaire.”

Al was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His greatest joy in life was his family. He was proud of his family and enjoyed witnessing the children and grandchildren reach for their dreams, persevere and gain independence. He was a man of few words yet a source of strength and guidance which helped shape his children to whom they are today.

Starting at an early age with the morning newspaper, Al was an avid reader. He was eager to learn and would often respond to a topic of conversation with: ‘You know, I read a book about this.’ His intellectual curiosity was evident in everything he did and was excellent in provoking deep thoughtful controversial discussions around the dinner table. With an exceptional aptitude for math as a teenager, Al began investing in the stock market. From that moment on, it became a lifelong passion of his. While some lessons were challenging and even gut-wrenching, his insight led to remarkable success. He shared his love of golf with his close friends and Steve waking at sunrise to walk the fairways whenever the weather allowed. Al was also a keen duplicate bridge player, where his sharp mind and strategic thinking shone. When he retired and moved to Victoria in 2016, he was content playing bridge several times a week.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held in the Sequoia Centre at McCall Gardens, 4665 Falaise Drive,Victoria, on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Lifewater Canada in memory of Allan Romanchuk, an organization that Al believed in and felt made a lasting impact. To honor his generosity, the family will match any donations made in his memory.

Though he may no longer be with us, the love and memories Al leaves behind will continue to inspire and guide us for years to come. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

Condolences may be offered to the family below.

    Donna and family.
Very sad and unreal to hear of Al’s death. Seems like yesterday we were young, energetic and fun loving members of the 1975 U of A Class of Medicine. I was so glad he kept in touch over all the years.
Donna, you and Al have honoured the medical profession and your families over your lives.
    Take care.

I am shocked and saddened today to read of Allan’s death. My sister, Brenda, and I grew up in Edmonton on the same block as Allan, Alice, and Donna. The Romanchuk family was a key feature of our universe as we then knew it. Allan and I started Grade 1 together at Prince Rupert School. The brilliance described in this tribute to him was evident from an early age. It does not surprise me that he was an exceptional physician and family man. His calm, earnest, and intelligent demeanour was his approach to living; it was his essence. I wish I had known he had retired in Victoria so I could have enjoyed a chance to meet up with him again. Brenda and I send our sincere condolences to Allan’s family, and particularly to Alice and Donna.

I have worked with many people over the decades, but Al by far, was the most kind, caring and dedicated person you could ever meet or work with. We had many laughs over the years.
Donna, you and Al had one of the most loving, respectful relationships I have witnessed. He worshipped you and that was easy for everyone to see.
