With sad and heavy hearts, the family of Dr. George Francis (Frank) Roseborough announce that he passed away on Saturday, October 1, 2016.

Born 1927, son of late Enid Winifred (Garrard) and Lorne Maxwell Roseborough, Frank was raised in Port Alberni, and is survived by his sister, Evelyn Isabella (Roseborough) Reid of New Hampshire, his five children – Lorne, Kimberlee, Trevor, Gwynneth, and Glen – his daughter-in-law, Shelley, and three grandchildren – Victoria, Alexandra and Nicholas – and by his many nieces and nephews.

As a young man, Frank left Vancouver Island in the 1940s, following his late brother John Burdette Roseborough, to pursue higher education at Mount Royal College (‘46). Frank went on to complete his science degree at The University of British Columbia (’49) and his medical degree at Queen’s University (’55).

At university, Frank joined the Canadian Officer Training Corps (COTC). In the late 1950s, he served with the Canadian Regular Army as a medical officer for the United Nations Emergency Forces (UNEF) peacekeeping mission during the Suez Canal Crisis.

In the Middle East, Frank developed a keen interest in eye diseases. Soon after, he enrolled in the prominent Kresge Eye Institute (Michigan), and became an eye surgeon (ophthalmologist). Upon entering private practice, Frank transferred to active Militia. As Lieutenant Colonel, he served as senior medical officer for the Pacific area. Frank was appointed Honorary Colonel from 1984 to 1988, and then retired.

Patients as well as medical and militia personnel will remember Frank as a committed medical professional and officer.

Equally, Frank will be remembered as the loving and devoted husband of his recently departed wife, Nancy Anne (Code) Roseborough. They shared 61 years of marriage by each other’s side, proudly raising five children, building two ophthalmology practices (Victoria and Duncan), developing hobbies, and supporting numerous Island artists. Frank was also a longstanding member of the Union Club of BC.

Frank’s family extend their sincere thanks to Dr Linda Ottley and caregivers Pelani and Lynn of SureWork Solutions for their compassionate care, and to staff at Veterans Health Centre (Broadmead Care), Mount St. Mary’s Hospital (Community Program), and Veterans Affairs Canada (Victoria office) for their wonderful support.

Frank’s life will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 12, 2016 at McCall Gardens, Royal Oak, 4665 Falaise Drive, Victoria, BC.

Gwynn…..your father served as honorary colonel of 11 Fd Amb while I was the DCO(name then was Maureen Fensom) back in the 1980’s. He was a thoroughly gracious officer and gentleman, did much good work for the unit, and was much admired and liked by the troops. As a physician, I also very much admired his dedication and expertise in his chosen field of ophthalmology….as a GP in Victoria I know he was much respected both by his peers and the GP’s who referred patients to him. No doubt you will be comforted by knowing that outside of his beloved family, he was so highly and fondly regarded by so many in other circles. May he rest in peace…..after a life so very well lived.

    Dearest Gwynne,

Jeff’s and my thoughts are with you Gwynne. But part of me feels comfort (for you) in knowing what an amazing daughter you have been to your parents in the past years. You have accompanied them until they can now find each other again.
    Take comfort in that.
Love from both Jeff and I.
