Commander, RCN (Retired)

After blessing his family, Dad died peacefully in his sleep at Broadmead Lodge in Victoria on September 4, 2013. He was born in Calgary on March 15, 1920 and is survived by his loving wife of 71 years Adelaide; his son Ted (Monika) of Victoria and daughter Deborah Hartwick (Clark) of Victoria; by his grandchildren Kristin Little (Derek), Jessica Larouche (Jeff), Emily Hartwick and Peter Hartwick; and by his great grandchildren Annika and Turner Little and Sophie and Sally Larouche.

Ted joined the Navy in 1940, served in the Battle of the Atlantic and received his Officer’s Commission at the end of the War. In the ensuing years he served in a variety of ships and establishments on both Coasts, captained two minesweepers and retired from the RCN in 1970. He then joined the BC Provincial Government and retired as Chief of Protocol in 1980.

Ted served on the Executive of the Naval Officers’ Association of Vancouver Island and was a long time member of St. John the Divine Anglican Church in Victoria, where he was Rector’s Warden and then served as Envelope Secretary for 20 years. He was a successful football coach in Norfolk, Virginia and Cornwallis, Nova Scotia and volunteered at the Victoria Cancer Clinic for eight years.

Dad loved his family unconditionally and constantly and treated everyone with respect and goodwill. We are all so lucky to have had this exceptional officer and gentleman in our lives.

The family thanks Dr. Gib McLean, Dr. Russell Grimwood and the caring staff at Broadmead Lodge for their attention to Dad.

A Memorial Service will be held at St. John the Divine Anglican Church, 1611 Quadra Street, Victoria on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 1 pm, followed by a reception in the Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation, #150 – 686 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC  V5Z 1G1.
