Born November 11, 1919
Died October 10, 2011
Barbara was born in Vancouver, BC to Etta Schubert and Alexander Poole. Her great-grandmother, Catherine Schubert is well known in B.C. history as part of the Overlanders. She spent her childhood on the Schubert ranch in Armstrong and at the home of Lester Patrick, the great hockey legend in the N.H.L. She graduated from nursing at St. Joseph’s Hospital in 1942. She married Bruce Farquhar Fraser and raised her family in Vancouver and later retired to Victoria in 1979. She enjoyed trips and hikes to Piers Island with friends, Mabel and Alf Slocumb. She spent time playing Ma Jong and volunteering at the Monterey Senior Center. Barbara was predeceased by her husband, Bruce in 1989 and her sister, Muriel McNeil in 2006. She is survived by her daughter, Cathy and her son, Barry along with a niece in Portland and nephews in Portland and Ottawa. The family would like to extend a special thank you to long-time friends, Arthur Teale and Alice Whincup. They are also very grateful to the staff at Oak Bay Lodge for their kindness over the last three years and to Dr. Ross McKay for his care and support over the years.
A Memorial Tea will be held in Barbara’s honour at MCCALL BROS. FAMILY CENTRE, Johnson & Vancouver Streets on Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2:30 pm. Donations in Barbara’s memory would be appreciated to the BC Cancer Foundation, 2410 Lee Avenue, Victoria, V8R 6V5 or the BC Mental Health and Addiction Services, #201 – 601 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V5Z 4C2.
