With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, grandmother, Oma, friend and inspiration, Elfriede “Elfie” Anna Maria Irwin, who left us peacefully on June 2, 2026, at the age of 93 years. Born on May 6, 1933, in Vöcklabruck, Austria, Elfie lived a life marked by resilience, dedication, and profound love for her family and friends.
Elfie’s journey began in the picturesque landscapes of Austria, where her strong work ethic and determination paved the way for an extraordinary life. It was this strong work ethic that brought her to England to begin a career in nursing.
Once in England, Elfie met Morris, the love of her life, and together they embarked on an incredible journey, filled with joy, laughter, cherished memories and eventually starting a family of their own.
In 1968, Elfie and Morris resettled their family in Manitoba, Canada, where she embraced the values of hard work and compassion. In this time, Elfie became a charge nurse in a hospital for disabled individuals.
In 1979, Elfie and Morris moved to the beautiful city of Victoria, where they continued to spread love, laughter and kindness.
Elfie will be remembered for her warmth, generosity, kindness and intellect. And her singing and yodelling! She touched the lives of countless individuals, leaving a lasting impact through her compassionate nature and unwavering support. Elfie was a loving mother and Oma, a devoted partner, and a cherished friend, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Elfie is predeceased by her soulmate, Morris, and her mother, Martha. Elfie will be lovingly remembered by her children, Alexandra and Jeffrey; her grandchildren, Christopher (Juliet) and Emily (Euan); and her very dear friend and companion, Lynn.
**thank you everyone for your overwhelming love and support**
