November 24, 1921 – April 28, 2009

Lief passed away suddenly, with his loving wife of 53 years, Mary, at his side. Born in Selkirk, Manitoba, the son of Aasta and Jack Erickson, Lief took great pride in his Icelandic heritage. He joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as a very young man and rose through the ranks from
S. Constable to Superintendent, Ret. He also served as Aide-de-camp for four Lieutenant Governors and for the Governor General of Canada. His postings took him across the length and breadth of the country, from Nova Scotia and Newfoundland to Frobisher Bay, British Columbia, Alberta and Ottawa. To each assignment, he brought integrity, empathy, a warm sense of humor, and a real appreciation for and interest in the people of each region. He took great pride in his 35 years of RCMP service. He also found time to devote to service organizations including the Freemasons and Scottish Rite, and to support a wide variety of charitable causes. In Victoria, he was a longstanding active member of Uplands Golf Club. Lief was a fine, gentle man who was loved and respected by a wide circle of friends and family. He will be greatly missed. He was predeceased by his brothers Clarence, Wilfred and Victor and sister Irene, and is survived by his wife Mary and by nieces and nephews in Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario.

Many thanks go to Dr. Ian Bridger for his excellent care during the past several years. In accordance with Lief’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Donations in Lief’s memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of B.C. and the Yukon.
